Big Latch On : A Celebration Of World Breastfeeding Week

Mums and babies from across the East Riding are being invited to take part in events to highlight the benefits of breastfeeding.

Events will be held at five different locations in the East Riding – Beverley, Bridlington, , Goole and – on Friday 5 August 2016.

They are part of international celebrations to mark World Breastfeeding Week, August 1 to 7, organised by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action.

Thousands of breastfeeding women and their babies across the world will gather in their own communities to take part in the Global Big Latch on, a synchronised breastfeeding event.

In the East Riding, events will be held at the shopping centre in Beverley; East Riding Leisure Bridlington, Driffield Children’s Centre; the Kingsway Children’s Centre in Goole and in the gardens of Withernsea Lighthouse. Women taking part are invited to arrive from 10am, ready for the start of the event at 10.30am.

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated in 120 countries. The first Big Latch On took place in New Zealand in 2005 and it has since taken off globally. This year it is hoped to break the current record of 14,889 children breastfeeding during the worldwide event.

East Riding children’s centres provide day today support to encourage breastfeeding.

Councillor , East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said she hoped that mothers will take the opportunity to take their babies and young children along to one of the events being held in the East Riding on 5 August.

“The Big Latch On provides an opportunity for breastfeeding women to get together in their local communities, host their own events and identify opportunities for on-going support,” she said.

There will be a free goody bag for the first 30 participants in the event at Flemingate in Beverley, who are asked to meet on the grassed area in front of East Riding College.

At East Riding Leisure Bridlington those taking part are asked to meet on the balcony next to the cafe area.
