Beverley Puppet Festival Present Alice And The White Rabbit

’s dream-like adaptation of the famous tale by Lewis Carroll, told through shadow theatre.

Join Alice on her magical adventure as she chases the White Rabbit back in time on a fantastic journey into Wonderland. On her travels she meets the Cheshire Cat and the March Hare at the Mediaeval Mad Hatter’s tea party.

But beware of the Queen of Hearts or you might just lose your head!

Alice & the White Rabbit celebrates different shadow techniques and is inspired by the Gothic architecture and Mediaeval times of the original White Rabbit stone carving, which really exists and can be found in St Mary’s Church in Beverley, East Yorkshire.

Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson, 1832-1898) was a regular visitor to Beverley and many believe the church’s little stone carving of a pilgrim hare / rabbit was the inspiration for John Tenniel’s illustrations of the White Rabbit being chased by Alice during her adventures under ground.

A Post Show Workshop that helps children learn about Contemporary Shadow Theatre Techniques will be held from 3.15pm – 4.15pm. Tickets for this are £4 / £5 each.

Children can explore the techniques of light and shadow and discover how a simple everyday object can transform into a scene from a science-fiction film or how our own bodies might change into a lumbering giant with a new head.

Experimenting with the use of different light sources, corridors of light, assorted colours and a 4 metre projection area with a huge screen, shadow theatre opens up an exciting world to inspire new creative projects whilst illustrating basic principles of shadow and light in a fun, visual and very memorable way.
