A drama group based at an East Riding day centre are set to open the main stage at a brand new and arts festival for the region.

The group of over 20 actors, from Millers Day Centre, in Beverley, will perform their very own production of The Jungle Book when they open the main stage at The Big Gig at the University of on 11 July.

The aim of the one-day festival is to create a fun, friendly, and inclusive environment which brings together people with and without disabilities to enjoy some of the best music and drama that the region has to offer.

Organised by Hull Red, the festival is a voluntary group which started life 10 years ago to address the difficulties that some people with disabilities can experience in accessing mainstream music events.

Millers’ drama group will stage a full performance of their latest pantomime The Jungle Book which features scenery that has been hand made by members of the group, a script that has been cleverly adapted by the team, and some incredible costumes that have been created by one of the actor’s parents.

Councillor Richard Harrap, East Riding of Yorkshire Council said:

“It is fantastic that Millers Day Centre is to play such a prominent role in what promises to be a truly inclusive and enjoyable event.

“There is so much talent in the East Riding which deserves to be showcased at an event like The Big Gig.

“Anything which helps to make music and arts events accessible to all, regardless of disability, is to be applauded.”

John Ireland, team leader at Millers Day Centre, said everyone is really looking forward to the festival and have been working hard in preparation.

“Everyone has worked so hard with the preparation for the performance and the cast are very excited at the prospect of performing on a public stage,” he said. “Rehearsals have been in full swing for a couple of months now and they have been going very well.

“We have also been busy preparing art work to be displayed during the event. We hope lots of people come along and support the event and have great time,” he added.

The event will take place across two stages – the main stage and an acoustic stage – showcasing a range of genres from the local music scene including soul, folk, ska, electronica, rock and funk.

There will also be a range of workshops and activities for all ages and abilities, children’s performers, an interactive sensory area, crafts, and food stalls.

Alex Holmes, who is one of seven volunteers organising the event, said:

“I’m thrilled with our line up. We’ve got some of the region’s best bands playing, alongside musicians and performers with learning disabilities who will be showcasing the amazing talent we have locally.

“We believe that when people join around something they love, like music or the arts, or good food, differences start to become less important and we start to see the commonalities we have with each other.”
