Two Wins Set Bishop Burton Rugby On Pathway To Success

Bishop Burton Rugby are enjoying a successful time on the pitch as they came away with two major wins against Edinburgh University and Wakefield College.

Despite bitterly cold conditions, and travelling more than 600 miles, both teams delivered stand-out performances, securing well-deserved wins against strong teams.

Earlier this week, the Bishop Burton BUCS Rugby Union team travelled more than 200 miles to take on top team, Edinburgh University. The home team, who have not lost a game at home since the start of the season saw their record fall, after the Bishop Burton squad stormed to victory with a 36 – 22 win.

Bishop Burton delivered first class team play, with standout performances from Joe Stafford, Rupert Kay and Tyler Price. Price pushed hard throughout the game to secure three penalties and an outstanding conversion. Rupert Kay was the man of the moment, expertly setting up Joe Stafford, and Saul Beavis twice, for some fantastic tries.

James Ashton and Mike Smith added another two tries to the scoreboard, resulting in a stomping 14-point lead ahead of Edinburgh University. The win takes Bishop Burton into second place in the league, just one point away from the top spot.

Closer to home, the Bishop Burton Rugby League Academy team – which competes in the newly created Elite College Super League – put in a barnstorming performance to record a 4 – 36 success away in Wakefield.

A whole team effort delivered some stellar performance from the team including back row forward Ross Osborne, who was the star man thanks to a hat trick of tries and some all-action play throughout.

Alongside Osborne, and in only his second game of rugby league, James Wright was a real danger to the opposition, delivering nice plays in offence and defence as well as helping himself to a try. Dylan Price, playing in right centre position, crossed for a brace and landed four goals from seven attempts. And finally, the team’s wildcard, Zeus Silk, got on the scoreboard with a very well deserved four pointer.

Wakefield were dogged throughout and never gave in despite facing a quality side who had put over a half century of points against them before the break. Wakefield was rewarded with a try in the final play of the game.

The win moves the Bishop Burton College Rugby League Academy up to third in the table ahead of Education on points difference and just one point behind second place Calderdale College. Hopwood Hall College leads the way in the Elite League Table with seven consecutive wins.
