In Brave Company – The Making of a War Memorial

158 Squadron

Peter W Naylor created his monument to the 158 Squadron at Lissett in order to commemorate the members of the squadron who lost their lives during World War 2. Although a contemporary work of art, Naylor’s work can be seen as part of a long-established tradition of public sculpture and war memorials. This exhibition traces the development of his monument from its inception to its installation.

For this outstanding work, Peter W Naylor has received the Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture 2010. This annual award is sponsored by the Marsh Christian Trust and administered by the Public Sculpture and Monuments Association (PMSA).

“Peter’s design was the one, from the moment I saw it, it was the winner, that is what I had had in mind for many a long year, to honour those brave men of 158 Squadron who paid the ultimate sacrifice”.  Adrian Hammond, Secretary, 158 Squadron Association.

‘Meet the Artist’ on Thursday 28th October (6.30pm – 7.30pm), when Peter will give a short talk on his approach to the project followed by a full lecture on Saturday 20th November (1.30pm – 3.30pm).
