‘The Memorial Fund’ Letter from Cllr David K Elvidge

Memorial

As I write this letter I do so with an immense sense of pride in my home town and the people that live there. My request for donations to fund a fitting memorial to those men and women from Beverley that have lost their lives in the service of their country since WW2 has been answered in a very decisive and for me a humbling manner.

The Town Council Office received two cheques last week from generous towns people, however what followed was a visit from a  local businessman who cares all about Beverley. He has raised the amount given to £800 with one magnificent and selfless gesture of support in memory of those we wish to remember.

However I have since spoken to several residents who still wish to donate. I would therefore say to the people of Beverley; the monies required for the memorial have been raised. I would also say to the residents of Beverley if you wish still to donate to the fund I would be happy to continue raising funds and look to refurbish the main war memorial in the garden. Most will remember the model tank and aeroplane on the monument which have been missing for far too long. The lettering has also faded and while the gardens were recently refurbished the memorials have not been touched for years.

Anyone wishing to donate can make their cheques payable to “The Memorial Fund” and send them to , 12 Well Lane, Beverley 9BL.

I would also ask my fellow Beverlonians to contact me regarding the names which should go on our new memorial. Families and friends with information can assist me in making sure this memorial remembers all those from our Town who have fallen while serving their country.

Thank you

Cllr David K Elvidge
