Scouts in the Beverley St Nicholas group were treated to a top-level talk on their town by Councillor David Elvidge. They had many ideas of their own about Beverley, and grabbed the opportunity to pass them on to the Councillor.
David Elvidge tells HU17.net his account of the evening
“Following a meeting at the Scouts AGM last year I find I must have made an impression on at least one man, because Scout Leader Harry invited me to visit his group at St Nicholas Community Centre. I arrived armed with several copies of the Beverley Town guide and an idea to give a brief view of what I think being a Councillor is all about.
“After my opening short description of how I’d seen the last three years or so, we talked about various issues in our town. Several of the scouts talked about our last Armed Forces Day and said how they had particularly liked the music element and the big stage.
“We moved on from that to allow the scouts to ask questions and comment on what they liked about Beverley, and also what they thought the town lacked. The older ones wanted a cafe bar for teenagers who are still too young to drink in pubs, somewhere they could go to hang out. The younger ones expressed their dismay in the lack of shops in Beverley for their age group.
“On a positive note, the young people liked the idea of live music in the town; this is one of the town councils proposals for next year. They all agreed a varied range of music would be good for everyone. Then on a different subject the scouts said they were very concerned about car drivers not stopping for them at crossings, especially the one near the leisure centre.
“All in all for me at least, a worthwhile night with polite, well-mannered and articulate young people who are a credit to their troop.”

Good for the scouts… I hope it gave them a good lesson of never bothering to do anything for your community, because at the end of the day most people in it don’t care about their neighbout and just want to kick off rather than do anything proactive…
