Nick’s crime thriller, ‘Broken Dreams’, introduces private investigator, Joe Geraghty, as Hull’s newest crime fighter.

Nick Quantrill finds himself among some of the best crime fiction writers in the UK including Ian Rankin in the Best of British selection.  Quantrill’s own novel, Broken Dreams has been compared to Rankin’s Rebus series.

Nick said

“This has been a great year and a year of firsts for me and my book signing at WHSmith’s at Beverley is another first for me.  This is the first time I have signed at any WHS store.”

Synopsis – ‘Broken Dreams by Nick Quantrill

Joe Geraghty, Private Investigator, is used to struggling from one case to the next, barely making the rent on his small office in the Old Town of Hull. Invited by a local businessman to investigate a member of his staff’s absenteeism, it’s the kind of surveillance work that Geraghty and his small team have performed countless times.

When Jennifer Murdoch is found bleeding to death, Geraghty quickly finds himself trapped in the middle of a police investigation which stretches back to the days when the city had a thriving fishing industry. As the woman’s tangled private life begins to unravel, the trail leads Geraghty to local gangster-turned-respectable businessman, Frank Salford, a man with a significant stake in the city’s regeneration plans. Still haunted by the death of his wife in a house fire, it seems the people with the answers Geraghty wants are the police and Salford, both of whom want his co-operation for their own ends. With everything at stake, some would go to any length to get what they want, Geraghty included.

Nick was a winner of the HarperCollins Crime Tour Competition in 2006 for his short story ‘Punishment’ before he went on to complete Broken Dreams.

Produced by Brough-based JayJay Media, it features interviews and outtakes, with footage showing students working in the classroom and workshop, using the modern facilities and enjoying extra-curricular activities, such as football.

The fast-paced and light-hearted film is set to an indie rock soundtrack and there is a one-minute quick edit version for people who just want a quick look before finding out more.

Principal Derek Branton said:

“This new video has really captured the essence of life at East Riding College; challenging, rewarding, fast-moving and fun.

“Rather than myself or other staff talking about what we think, it uses the honest views of real learners to tell prospective students what they can expect from the College.

“The video is entertaining and interesting at the same time, and I would encourage anyone to watch it to find out more about East Riding College.”

Jon Fell, senior producer at JayJay Media, said: “Working on the film was a lot of fun for our team.  The staff and students were really welcoming which enabled us to capture the College’s unique atmosphere and produce a distinctive, highly stylised film.

Not your everyday dream of a huge house, a fast car, a trip around the world.

No, Kris isn’t your everyday person. In fact, you could say he’s the latest in a long line of eccentrics trying to make their mark in a world where their particular skill usually keeps them firmly in the background.

Kris is a rock drummer. And yesterday on Beverley Westwood he finally made his dream come true. You may even have seen or heard him. Because there, sat in the middle of a field on his own on a Monday teatime, Kris treated nature and the odd bemused dog walker to a virtuoso display of open-air drumming.

The 22-year-old from Hull may seem slightly mad, but there’s no doubting the enjoyment and sense of fulfillment he achieved from playing his one-man-and-his-dog open-air concert.

He told HU17.net: “For as long as I can remember I have wanted to play the drums in the open air.

“But I haven’t had a car to be able to do it until two weeks ago, as lugging my kit from Hull to Beverley is not really possible.

“Now I got my car and I’ve finally done it!”

Kris is the drummer in Hull-based death metal band  IRG, who are set to tear up the UK later this month on a nationwide tour.

Sitting in the middle of a quiet field in the distinctly un-metal setting of the Westwood seems an odd way to prepare for what will be an ear-splitting and raucous celebration of his band’s particular genre.

But to stand there and speak to Kris was to understand just why he has taken time out to enjoy this particular gig.

He continued: “I chose the Westwood as I thought it was somewhere where I would not upset or disturb anyone. And where I was sat the sound was really bouncing off the racecourse.

“I’d been waiting for a good day like this for two weeks and to be able to sit there and play was unbelievable.

“The views of the town and countryside were fantastic and it really inspired me.”

The team made use of the broad pavement outside the Royal Standard, North Bar Within, to entertain drinkers and restaurant goers with a host of colourful dances.

Dancing to the accordion and fiddle and – naturally – with tankards filled to the brim with real ale, the Morris men performed their full repertoire of dances, complete with clashing sticks and hankies.

The evening was rounded off when members of the public were invited to join them for their final two dances. The quality of the dancing was somewhat lowered and the participants may have felt (and looked) a bit foolish, but as the General Election gets into full flow, a bit of foolishness was a pleasant antidote.

Relatives of Beverley’s fallen war heroes are being sought to help publically commemorate their loved ones.

Beverley Town Council has commissioned a memorial for Hengate Gardens to recognise the sacrifices of the town’s sons and daughters in military conflicts since World War 2.

The memorial will be engraved with the names of those who have died in armed struggles around the world over the past 65 years.

The criteria for being included on the memorial are a) the individual must have been born in Beverley or their parents resident in Beverley when they were born; b) they must have lived in Beverley for at least five years when they died; c) they must have been serving when they died.

So far, two heroes have been confirmed for the memorial.

Lance Corporal Gary Bingley MM of 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment: Lance-Corporal Gary Bingley posthumously received the Military Medal for his daring assault on an emplaced Argentine gun position that was holding up the British advance early in the engagement, Goose Green, The Falklands, May 1982.

Acting Sergeant Michael Lockett MC, of 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters): Sergeant Lockett was on a dismounted patrol near Patrol Base Sandford in the Gereshk district of Helmand province when an explosion occurred, killing him before he could be extracted to hospital, in September 2009.

Songs on the albums include ‘What about the Connie Club?’ which features most of the pubs in the town within the lyrics and ‘Wezzo’ that tells the story of growing up and playing on the Beverley Westwood.

The Ragamuffins, who are well known locally for the songs they write and perform about the town are currently working on a book. The book will contain stories about the Beverley and provide an insight into the songs they have written.

Both of albums by the Ragamuffins can be purchased from the Beverley Tourist Office.

Paul and Alan Acklam were joined by over 30 valued customers on a visit to the Plaxton factory in Scarborough where their new 51-seater Elite coach was built.

The group toured the factory to see how Plaxton’s skilled workforce design and build luxury coaches.  From a chassis with an engine to a gleaming new coach equipped with the latest technology and facilities takes around 9 weeks and the party was able to see how the transformation is achieved.

Asked why Acklams had chosen Plaxton to build their new vehicle, Alan Acklam commented: “We like to support local companies and Plaxton supply quality vehicles and offer excellent service.”

Facilities on the new coach include airline style overhead lockers, WC, full CCTV and a retractable flat screen which can show the view from the driver’s seat as well as DVDs.  Seats offer exceptional passenger comfort with a ribbed design and rich red upholstery.  The aerodynamic profile and familiar Acklam livery create a stunning appearance.

After a buffet lunch the party boarded the brand new coach and set off on the return journey to Beverley via Scarborough’s seafront.  At the wheel was Acklam’s driver Malcolm Healey who had the honour of being the first to drive the new coach.  As a professional driver he appreciated the latest technology and manoeuvred the 12 metre long coach with ease around the streets of Scarborough.  The Elite travelled effortlessly up the steep slope of Staxton Hill and passengers had a very comfortable journey back to Beverley.

Thorne won the on points to the home fans delight which included other Beverley boxers Vinnie Collingwood, Jolly Thorne and a number of people who had travelled from Beverley to Hull to support the fighter.

Thorne was delighted with the result which was his first win in a competitive fight, Davies put on a good show though it was not to be for the York based boxer. St Pauls ABC once again showed their class as a boxing club, there were also wins for Jay Farrow, Conner Coghill, John Bean, James Cunningham and the charismatic Joe Wilson.

The Mayor of Beverley was there to set the runners of before he completed the event walking the course with Major Chris Jackson and his son Adam Jackson. Adam who has had major surgery and suffers from Cystic Fibrosis got round the full course with his Father and the Mayor of Beverley.

A steam engine provided a side attraction; runners and members of the public were permitted to blow the whistle on the engine in return for a small donation, special thanks from the owners of the Steam Engine was given to Red House Farm Cottages who provided them with free overnight accommodation.

The remit of the team is to source brand new exciting opportunities for young people to get involved in during their spare time, link them up and support the work of the Youth Action Team. This is in itself is indeed commendable but in addition Sue Dudill, the Youth Volunteer Adviser there for CSV’s Vinvolved team, is also a recognised promoter for the European Commissions Youth in Action Programme and in this role she obtains funding through the British Council in London to open up Europe to our young people in our geographically isolated part of the UK.

The team and 9 participants have recently returned back from a truly memorable week in Serbia where they took part in a youth exchange with their counterparts in Krusevac which is approximately 3 hours drive south of Belgrade towards Pristina. The name of the project is ‘Dancing in the Rain’ and it signifies their dogged determination to try and influence East Riding of Yorkshire Council into improving youth facilities in the town for all young people.

During the week, they took part in a non-formal learning experience based on 3 dynamic workshops and to complement this, visits to Belgrade and Vrnjacka Spa were also organised. The UK team put on a splendid intercultural evening to give the Serbians a taste of England at its best; it was both interactive and educational and extremely well received. In addition to this, Sue included many worthwhile learning mechanisms to the week’s programme, acquired at a number on international trainings over the years which helped all the participants to very quickly intermingle and make the most of the week. She said, ‘intercultural learning on this European level is a fascinating and meaningful way to break down barriers between groups of young people from very different cultures, it helps to combat racism and xenophobia and contributes to a more unified Europe.’

Guests included the Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, Susan Cunliffe-Lister, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, the Vice Lord Lieutenant, the chairman of the East Riding Council, the mayor of Beverley, councillor David Elvidge and senior members of the police and fire service.

The first part of the evening consisted of songs from the choir and band singing and playing popular music. The second part of the evening took the form of a drumhead commemorative service lead by Canon Cyril Dawson, chaplain to the Royal British Legion. Seven standards representing local branches of the Royal British Legion from around the East Riding were present led by the county parade marshall Eddie Large accompanied by over thirty members of the Royal British Legion.

Wreaths were laid in front of the cabinet in the hall containing the names of those who had fallen in World War I and the audience joined in three hymns before the standards were marched off.

The exhortation in honour of those who lost their lives in world conflicts was given by Jack Ford, the Royal British Legion county president and the last post and reveille by the trumpet section of the brass band.

The evening was the brainchild of Andrew Eastwood, chairman of Beverley Memorial Hall, who said he was delighted with the turnout and support for the occasion from all concerned. “Alan Higbee, the chairman of the East Riding branch of the RBL, together with the parade marshall, Eddie Large were instrumental in showing the trustees of the hall how to organise the evening and we are indebted to them for their help and interest.” He said.“ I think in view of the events last week in Afghanistan the occasion meant more to the audience than in other years.”

The Beverley Memorial Hall will be closing in the new year to undergo a £1.4m refurbishment.

In the Memorial Gardens, Hengate, Beverley Mr Longcaster of Molescroft Primary School held a special assembly for the children from his school and from Keldmash Primary School Primary School, Beverley. The youngsters then sung a hymn before the Memorial Gardens observed a period of silence.
