Beverley Westwood was filled with excitement and energy as approximately 200 runners of all ages participated in the highly anticipated Beverley Fun Run.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted public gatherings on Westwood, this was the first event on the street since then. A resounding success, the Fun Run was organized by the Beverley Braves and aimed at promoting teamwork, respect, and good physical and mental health.
Phil Horsfield and Lee Stevens, who have now assumed joint coaching responsibilities for the first team, will feel they have got plenty to build on following this pre-season workout against a Myton Warriors second string.
A good showing by the new players, a defensive clean sheet and a hat-trick for wing-man Jonny Norman were the highlights of the afternoon.
Beverley were beaten 20-10 by Barrow Island in a match that was always going to be a tough ask going to Cumbria against a promotion-chasing outfit towards the end of what has been a difficult campaign.
The Blue and Golds were in this contest for 50 minutes but sadly faded in the final 30 minutes of the game which was once again played in very hot conditions.
Now sitting 7 points adrift of Wigan St Judes in the table, only the unlikely event of them winning all of their last 4 games and St Jude’s losing their remaining 2 can save them from the drop to division 3 now.
The Blue and Golds slipped to a disappointing defeat last Saturday on a very warm afternoon at the Leisure Center.
They led for most of the first half but four tries, two of which were on either side of the interval sealed the points for one of the automatic promotion favourites.
The Blue and Golds breathed hope into their season and threw themselves a lifeline in the NCL Division 2 relegation battle with a 22-20 win over Wigan St Judes.
On a very warm afternoon, a somewhat patched-up lineup, as has been so often the case in an injury-ravaged campaign, looked to be going down tamely to defeat.
The Blue and Golds will see this as another missed opportunity to pull away from the relegation zone. Having fallen 12-0 behind after only
10 minutes, they responded fantastically with 4 well-worked tries to lead 18-12 at the break. The second half proved to be a disappointment as they had to do far too much defending and struggled to create chances in attack.
The Blue and Golds came up against a strong Barrow Island outfit at the Leisure Center on Saturday as they were beaten 18 – 40 by Barrow Island.
The Cumbrians were an efficient unit with bulk across the park. They built up a 32-6 half-time lead and Beverley will at least take heart from an improved second-half showing.
The Blue and Golds produced their best performance of the season beating Clock Face Miners 18-12 at the Beverley Leisure Center. The victory sees Beverley ARLFC climb off the foot of the table.
Indeed, the first 40 minutes were near flawless as they led 18-0 at the break. They then had enough tenacity and spirit to survive a second-half revival by the Merseyside outfit and claim 2 more valuable league points.
This was a very encouraging performance in anticipation of the 2022 season for the Blue and Golds.
A new look Beverley lineup, probably in the final analysis out enthused their higher-ranked opponents to give themselves a pre-season boost. 6 new faces lined up in the 20 man squad and impressed new Head Coach Trevor Penrose.
The NCL fixtures for 2022 have been released. In a tricky looking opening month in division 2, Beverley will open up with a trip to Hunslet Warriors.
The following week, they will entertain Normanton Knights, in what will be their only home fixture in March, before hitting the road to Dewsbury Moor and Woolston Rovers.
Beverley’s 2021 season has now concluded and they held an end of season awards evening last Saturday evening. There were four awards up for grabs.
Lewis Miller took the committee player of the year. Billy Riby took the coaches player of the year. Dan Smart took the players player of the year and the young player of the year went to Dan Spence.
The tough schedule of matches took its toll on the Blue and Golds as they were beaten 50-0 by West Hull.
A depleted Beverley outfit, backing up from Thursday evening’s outing at Hull Dockers, simply had to do too much defending. A full-strength West Hull outfit took full advantage to hit the half-century mark.
The Blue and Golds slipped to this comprehensive defeat against their significantly bulkier and more experienced opponents last Saturday on their travels through to York.
