Bright Careers Beckon For Two Sporting Williamsons Solicitors

Williamsons Solicitors

Two newly qualified lawyers are realising their ambitions with permanent positions at Williamsons Solicitors. Hull-based Lucy Ordidge is in the industrial disease department, while Rachel Stott is in the family department, working from Driffield. Their careers have blossomed after a period of intense legal study and in-house training for the two 26-year-olds. Ms Ordidge joined Williamsons Solicitors, at its head office on Lowgate, in 2010 for six months as a paralegal, officially qualifying as a solicitor in 2012 while on a training contract with the firm. She is at the heart of the department’s claimant side work, representing defendants with industrial diseases or conditions, such as hearing loss, in their negotiations with insurers. The young lawyer likes going head-to-head in court with opposing barristers. “I really enjoy the advocacy side of the job and being in court representing our clients against barristers acting for the big insurance firms,” said Ms Ordidge, who organises industrial disease clinics in Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield, while keeping abreast of case law developments. After graduating with a BA in philosophy from the University of Hull in 2008, Ms Ordidge completed a one-year graduate law conversion at BPP Law School in Leeds, doing the equivalent of a…

By

To celebrate Older Persons Day on October 1st the University of Hull’s Music Department, the Faculty of Health and Social Care, along with Future Years Yorkshire and Humber Forum on Ageing, and U3A Beverley worked on an intergenerational Flash Mob production. This event meant staff, students’ and older people produced a musical Flash Mob by singing Bohemian Rhapsody to diners in Staff House over the lunch time period. The event was initiated and organised by Dr Mary Laurenson in conjunction with Dr Lee Tsang and choreographed by student Timothy Shaw. The production was made possible by the singing prowess of music and drama students and U3A organisers Diane Francis and Ann Dixon, and the steadfast singing involvement of the members of Beverley U3A Branch. Thank you to all the staff, students, and U3A members who rehearsed throughout the year to produce the Flash Mob to celebrate National Older People’s Day. Use Facebook to Comment on this Post

Are soft drinks good or bad for you?

September 19, 2012
By

Psychologists at the University of Hull would like you to take part in a long-term study of the effects of soft drinks on mood and diet over nine weeks. This involves drinking four special drinks each day and coming to the laboratory once a week to be weighed and measured. You will also have to record what you eat and drink in a diary some days (but not the whole nine weeks). If you: • Are a man aged between 30 and 55 • Are not currently on a diet to lose weight • Are a little overweight • Can easily get to the University of Hull • Are available to take part for a nine-week period at some point over the coming months • Do not currently smoke Then we would like you to take part in the study. The study will help us to understand how soft drinks affect people’s mood and eating, and how people gain weight in middle-age. If you take part, then at the end of the study we will be able to give you some useful information and guidance about what you eat and drink. For participating, we will cover your travel costs to…

HULL : Keep Calm And Create Your Future

August 17, 2012
By
Hull UNi

‘Keep calm and get researching’ is the key advice from the University of Hull for all students looking for a university place following their A-Level results. A-level results in England will be released on August 16 and a flurry of activity is expected at universities across the country as students aim to secure a place on a course before the autumn terms start. The key advice for students who receive unexpected results – better or worse – is to check whether your original institution will still accept you, and then start to research your options. # Look for courses you would like to do, similar courses that may have different grade requirements and also research the universities. Then pick up the phone and call the helplines on 0844 522 8001 for Hull or 0844 522 8002 for Scarborough. Those calling the University of Hull at either the Hull or Scarborough campuses will speak to specially trained staff. They can then put potential students in direct contact with departmental admissions tutors, who know each of the courses inside and out. All students made an offer by the University of Hull are given a chance to visit the University before deciding. Glenn…
