East Riding Local Plan

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has secured funding from the Government to allow for the refurbishment of the existing traveller site at Woodhill Way, in Cottingham. Works will include the replacement of all utility blocks on the site and improvements to the existing waste water system. The refurbishment of the site will also allow for one additional pitch to be provided, helping to meet an identified need in the area. All works will be contained within the existing site. A temporary site will be created near to the Skidby roundabout to allow for the refurbishment works to be undertaken. This site was previously used as a compound for the recent A164 Humber Bridge to Beverley Route Improvement Scheme. Upon completion of the refurbishment of Woodhill Way, the temporary site will be reinstated to its previous open nature. A planning application for this proposal, including the temporary site at Skidby roundabout, is due to be submitted in the middle of June. Subject to approval, it is intended that a formal start on site will be made in November, with completion of works due in December 2014. The council has arranged a public drop-in session to provide more information on this proposal.…

East Riding Local Plan

The council is now underway with a £2 million surface dressing programme that will see around 650,000 square metres of highway resurfaced between now and August. Work began last week on sections of the network in Holderness and this week sees maintenance teams working nights on the A1079 at Arras Hill, near Market Weighton, and the A1035 Tickton Bypass, so as to minimise disruption to motorists and the travelling public. Surface dressing forms part of the council’s proactive approach to the maintenance of the 3,500km of highway network in the East Riding and takes place every year on both urban and rural roads. Surface dressing has four main purposes: to provide texture and skid resistance to an existing surface, to seal a road against water, to stop disintegration and to provide a uniform appearance for a patched road. Councillor Chris Matthews, cabinet portfolio holder for infrastructure, highways and emergency planning at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Ensuring the roads and infrastructure of the East Riding, as a whole, is in the best possible order long term is a top priority for the council. “Surface dressing provides a value for money and proactive approach by sealing roads, reducing reactive repair…

The Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP, Secretary of State for Transport, is today visiting the East Riding to mark the completion of highway works on the A164 and speak to users of the council’s Wheels to Work Scheme, in Goole, which was funded by the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF). The £10 million A164 Humber Bridge to Beverley Route Improvement Scheme, to which the council contributed £2.3 million, began in spring 2012 and was designed to reduce congestion, particularly at peak intervals, and improve traffic flows for up to 35,000 vehicles using the road each day. As well as the installation of a section of dual carriageway, between Willerby and Castle Hill, the council’s contractor, Jackson Civil Engineering, also reconfigured four roundabouts and constructed lengths of new footpath/cycleway. To commemorate the occasion, Mr McLoughlin, Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and Adam Tuke, contracts director for Jackson Civil Engineering, will be planting a tree at the site. In the afternoon, the Transport Secretary will be visiting Goole to view one of the schemes being funded by the £1.8 million the council successfully secured from the LSTF for the ‘Get Moving Goole’…

What's Afoot ? Great New Guided Walking Holidays For 2013/14

John Carter, long time presenter of TV’s ‘Wish You Were Here’ programme and seasoned globetrotter explores some exciting new short and long haul guided walking destinations across the globe. I learned the hard way that it is never wise to base your travel plans on a unique event, no matter how spectacular and “unmissable” that event may be. It happened some years ago when I travelled with a TV crew to Siena in Italy, for the specific purpose of filming the Palio – the horse race around the Piazza del Campo. It was to be the highlight of our film with its action, colour, noise and excitement. Unfortunately torrential rain caused the whole thing to be postponed and our grand plan – not to mention what would have been the best sequence in the entire film – disappeared down the city’s storm drains. That memory of everything going disastrously awry was triggered when I spotted a super holiday to Siena and Florence which is featured in the latest collection of holidays from Ramblers Worldwide. Sensibly, the organisers have avoided the high summer, when the city is extremely crowded, with or without the horse race, and provide their clients with the…
