Hearty Lives Hull wins national award

Hearty Lives Hull team, a partnership between the British Heart Foundation, Hull City Council and NHS Hull, is one of nine teams to receive a prestigious national award from the British Heart Foundation (BHF). The BHF Achievement Awards recognise staff and organisations funded or supported by the BHF that have shown excellence in heart healthcare. Hearty Lives Hull Community Sports Development Service was selected by the judges to win the Team of the Year award. The judges were impressed with the the team have been doing in Hull to increase physical activity levels, particularly with hard to reach adults from varied backgrounds, ages and abilities. Some of the examples of the work the team have done include: Work with care homes across Hull (particularly those in deprived wards) and Hull’s coaching provider network, to deliver activities in Boccia, Curling, Golf, and chair exercise to residents in care homes. The climax of this was the ‘care home games’ whereby teams from care homes in Hull and East Riding came together to compete against one another in a Boccia competition. HULL : Get in touch with new tennis activity

A new and exciting sport is coming to Hull for the first time next week. touchtennis which was created by Rashid Ahmad, who is also a former world champion, is coming to the region for the very first time. Hull City Council’s Sports Development Team is running a six week pilot in touchtennis, with the first session on Monday 19 November, 10 – 11.30am. touchtennis is a sport that all ages can get involved in. The game is played with foam balls, on reduced sized courts with children sized racquets. The key to winning the game is to outwit your opponents rather than having to use the power strokes needed in mainstream tennis. touchtennis aims to encourage a level playing field and sportsmanship. Rashid Ahmad said: “I’m really excited to see touchtennis develop a following in Hull and it is great that it is being supported by the local authority. For some time now the sport has been creeping north and this year it’s really taking off with four tournaments being played there. “With the development of these weekly sessions in Hull, I hope to see lots more tournaments and social sessions in the Yorkshire region and maybe someday even…

HULL : New Zumba course to get people moving

A brand new five-week Zumba taster course is starting next week in east Hull. The course, which is open to ladies aged 18 and over, starts on Tuesday 18 September, from 6 – 7pm at the Isaac Newton Sports Centre on Hemswell Avenue. The sessions are being run in partnership between Hull City Council, Marfleet Children’s Centre and the Isaac Newton Sports Centre. Andrew McKee, Community Sports Development Officer – East, said: “This is a great way for residents of Greatfield to get active through the Zumba craze that is sweeping the country. The sessions are low cost and a great way to see if you like the activity without the pressure of a lengthy gym membership.” Each session costs £2.50 per session and people can turn up with no need to book. HULL : Tennis Open Day Is Set To Be ‘Ace’

On Sunday 23 September, 10am – 2pm, the Hull FC Tennis Academy is hosting a Tennis Open Day for anyone aged 4 – 80 years of any ability. Free coaching is available from coaching team B2 Tennis throughout the day as follows: 10 – 10.45am: 4 – 7 yrs 10.45 – 11.30am: 8 – 9 yrs 11.30am – 12.30pm: 10 -11 yrs 12.30 – 1.30pm: 11 – 16yrs 1.30 – 2pm: 14 years plus – Cardio Tennis, a fun fitness session to music The sessions are being run in partnership between Hull City Council, Hull FC Tennis Academy and the Lawn Tennis Association. Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said: “We are always looking at new ways to help people get fitter whilst having an enjoyable time. HULL : England football star to visit new Hull team

A newly formed Hull women’s football team is set to be visited by an English international footballer to inspire and develop their skills further. Rockford Rangers FC will have three visits from English international footballer Sue Smith after the team successfully recruited women who wanted to play football. Following their successful recruitment campaign Rockford Rangers FC has been rewarded with the visits from Sue Smith who has been awarded over 90 caps for England and has recently been commentating at the Olympics. Sue will visit the football team three times over the next couple of months to give the Rockford Rangers players chance to ask questions about top level football, be trained and coached by her too. The team, who are based at Kinloss Garth on Bransholme, are also opening these sessions to other women who are interested in playing women’s football. The sessions are on Wednesday’s on 22 August, 29 August and 5 September from 7pm. HULL : A community park officially opens following redevelopment

The official opening of the Noddle Hill Playground will take place on Friday 3 August by The Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber, Councillor Danny Brown. The community playground is open for business; in time for the school summer holidays and adjoins the Bransholme Lakes Local Nature Reserve, so even more reason to visit. Hull City Council’s Sports Development Team will offer a varierty of fun activities from 11am and asking young people what activities they would like to see in the park during the summer holidays. They will be helping with the celebrations as well as running the family orienteering day taking place in the Nature Area from 1 – 3pm where families can learn how to find their way round. A new community paramedic, Paul Houghton will be attending on the day to introduce himself to local residents. His role is to provide a quick response medic service for the area, and having local knowledge of the estate allows him to be in a better position to respond to calls. Sewerby Hall and Gardens is hosting a wide variety of children’s events throughout the school holidays. Wednesday, 1 August sees East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Sports Development Team host their Family Archery event. Starting from 1pm, each half-hour session is limited to eight places but there is no need to book. Just turn up and have a go. Thursday, 2 August sees the return of Rusticus Wacky Walks. Previously featured earlier in the year and immensely well-received, the Rusticus team brings their very own take on summer games and sporting good fun. Wacky Walks takes visitors on a marathon of mayhem tracking the story of the ancient and modern Olympic Games. As always, crazy characters will be on hand, from barmy Greeks to modern British heroes as they have never been seen before. See how the games were started, meet some of the great characters from the pantheon of ancient and modern international sporting heroes and take part in some of the nuttiest athletic events ever devised, including bizarre real events from the early days of the games. To kick-start the summer holidays, Sewerby Hall and Gardens is hosting a wide variety of children’s events throughout July and August. Wednesday, 25 July sees East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Sports Development Team host their Bush Craft event. Starting from 1pm, children can follow in the footsteps of people like Ray Mears and Bear Grylls. Participants will find out which plants and animals can be used to help us live and survive. Thursday, 26 July sees the return of Rusticus Wacky Walks. It previously featured earlier in the year and immensely well-received, the Rusticus team brought their very own take on summer games and sporting good fun.
