Police Remind People About The Use Of Social Media

December 3, 2012
By

As the interest and the use of social media grows increasingly popular Humberside Police are sending out a reminder to people to be careful with what they post on social media sites and also what pages they set up. Nationally there has been a recent increase in the number of cases where police have investigated messages, postings and images placed on Twitter and Facebook. These have in a number of cases been deemed offensive towards others and have at times had the potential to hinder on going criminal investigations. With this in mind, Police in Humberside are asking people not to set up Facebook groups with the sole or potential aim of causing offence to others and not to use the power of social media to verbally abuse others as you may find yourself subject to a criminal investigation. Detective Sergeant Dean Minter from the Crime Team in Scunthorpe said: “We respond to a number of complaints from people about postings via social-networking sites. “The power of social media means that what is written can often been seen by hundreds and at times thousands of people, which can end up on the front pages of national and local media, which…

HULL : Police Launch Operation Nightwing To Tackle Domestic Violence

November 23, 2012
By

Lots of things will be going up this Christmas: the tree and decorations, food prices, the number of nights out, alcohol intake, domestic violence. Stress levels tend to hit a peak during the festive period, which is what professionals believe may significantly contribute to the increased number of calls Humberside Police and partner agencies receive for domestic related incidents, between the months of November and January. A campaign is being launched in Hull on Friday 23 November, 2012, to make people aware of the help and support which is available to victims and perpetrators of domestic violence and abuse. The poster campaign will be visible at bus stops, on bill boards, in pubs, in cinema washrooms and inside buses. Operation Nightwing was launched in 2005. It is a police led domestic violence project, which runs from late November until the beginning of January every year. Extra resources are made available, so that officers can act immediately to respond to calls for service, which are of a domestic violence nature. Police staff and officers will be available to answer calls and manage investigations swiftly and effectively, and sign post all of the relevant parties to specialist support services where applicable, which…

Marsh-Harrier

A joint investigation has been launched following the death of a rare bird of prey in on the banks of the River Humber near Goxhill in North Lincolnshire. The dead marsh harrier, which had taken poison, was discovered on top of a large bush on 27 May 2012 by a local bird watcher who was monitoring a breeding pair of marsh harriers in the area. The position of the dead bird aroused his suspicion as its spread wings suggested it had fallen from the sky. Humberside Police, the RSPB and Natural England have been working together to investigate the incident. Sergeant Howard Garlick from Brigg Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This is one of the more unusual incidents that police are called to investigate. Whilst it is not one of our regular priorities, all reasonable steps will be taken to investigate this matter and prevent further loss of these rare birds.” Mark Thomas, RSPB Senior Investigations Officer said: “This is another appalling example of the crimes which continue to be committed against birds of prey. “Poisoning is a particularly insidious method of persecution both because it causes the bird great suffering and also because it is so indiscriminate.” Tony Bird, Lead…

Rouge Trader Sentenced After Regional Police Operation

October 31, 2012
By

Humberside Police have played a vital role in bringing one rogue trader to justice. Sailey PRICE (35) from South Yorkshire was given a five year prison sentence at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday 25 October for a series of distraction burglaries. Sailey would target the homes of vulnerable and elderly members of the community offering work. Once inside; he would then steal various items from their homes. Some of these occurred in the East Riding as well as South Yorkshire. An elderly vulnerable disabled Goole lady was one of Sailey PRICE’s victims back in September 2011; after he deceived her into thinking she needed roofing work on her semi-detached bungalow. The man stole £4000 in cash from her home. Detectives working on the case recognised a pattern occurring across the whole of the Yorkshire and Humber region and launched a regional operation called ‘Operation Rocker’ to locate the bogus caller. Operation Rocker was established as a result of a series of distraction and fraud type offences involving a roofing ruse to obtain significant amounts of money from a number of elderly people throughout 2011. The offences occurred nationally, predominately within the Yorkshire and Humber region; however, the offending went as…

131012 - Accosting - Barrow Road - Barton LOG 637

Police in North Lincolnshire are making inquiries into a report of an accosting that is alleged to have taken place on Barrow Road in Barton-on-Humber at 1645hrs on Saturday 13 October. A 13-year-old girl was walking past Baysgarth School in the town on her own when a small, black car drew up alongside her and the man who was driving asked her if she wanted a lift. The girl declined the offer and the man tried to persuade her to accept the lift stating that it was raining and she would get wet. The girl explained she was meeting her mum and the man, who was alone in the vehicle, then drove off up Barrow Road away from the town centre. The driver is described as a mixed race man, aged 20 to 30 years with shortly shaved hair and clean shaven face. Detective Sergeant Ivan Simms said: “It is not clear what the intentions of this man were. “It is alleged he stopped his car and spoke to the young girl but he did not make any physical attempt to get her into his vehicle. “I appreciate that due to other reported incidents in the Humberside area and nationally…

HULL : Underwater Search & Marine Unit goes live across Yorkshire and the Humber

September 12, 2012
By

The Yorkshire and the Humber Underwater Search & Marine Unit is launched this week with a demonstration dive taking place at Hull Marina to mark the occasion. The unit, based in Humberside, is made up of a dedicated team of one police sergeant and nine specially trained police officers who will deliver the service on a full time basis to all four police forces of Yorkshire and the Humber. It is just one of a number of already established units set up through Policing Yorkshire and the Humber, to maintain force capabilities at a time when significant budget reductions have to be made. The new unit will deliver savings in the region of £400,000 per year; money that forces can reinvest into protecting local frontline resources. Work on developing the unit began back in November 2011 when the four Chief Constables agreed to the idea of a single Underwater Search and Marine Unit. Detailed research at the time identified that the three forces with their own in-force Underwater Search capability, South Yorkshire Police, West Yorkshire Police and Humberside Police, together spent over £1m per year on maintaining the provision. 28 officers worked within the three separate units but only five…

Come And Celebrate Diversity With Humberside Police

In an attempt to help reduce the number of casualties on the road across the Humberside area, police are urging motorists and their passengers to buckle up as part of a forcewide casualty reduction campaign being launched on Saturday 01 September 2012. From 01 September until 30 September 2012, a number of police officers will be working closely with Safer Roads Humber enforcement officers, paying increased attention to seat belt offences with offenders being prosecuted, and advice leaflets handed out. There will be additional high visibility policing activity across the force, particularly at locations identified as collision hot spots, with the aim being to increase seat belt wearing compliance levels. According to government research; as a result of drivers and passengers wearing seat belts to comply with legislation, 370 deaths and 7,000 serious injuries are prevented nationally each year. National seat belt compliance surveys (local figures are not available) show around 85 per cent of front seat occupants and 50 per cent of rear seat occupants, wear seat belts in vehicles. Inspector Paul Sergeant, Roads Policing Inspector for Humberside Police said: “Each year the police sends out a message to people travelling in vehicles, which is simple, put on your…
