MP’s campaign celebrates historic pork deal with China

May 28, 2012
By

Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, today congratulated both the UK pork industry and Government ministers on a historic £50m trade deal with the Chinese Government to allow British pork exports to China. Graham has been campaigning to ensure that new markets are secured for East Yorkshire and other British pork and raised the matter with David Cameron at the first Prime Minister’s Questions of 2012. Much of the pork that will be exported is from the so-called “fifth quarter” of the pig such as offal and trotters which tends not to be consumed in the UK. The deal comes after years of talks and there are hopes that lamb and beef exports may soon follow so that UK companies can take further advantage of the world’s second-biggest economy. Graham said: “With many pig farmers and Cranswick’s Preston facility in my constituency, pork exports are an important part of the local economy. I’m delighted that we’ve secured this deal so that we can reverse the long-term decline in UK pork production which occurred under the last Government.” “Earlier this year I met with the British Pork Executive (BPEX) and Cranswick Country Foods to discuss opening up foreign markets such…

Coastal Grants Deadline Extended

April 3, 2012
By

Last February, the council launched the second and final round inviting applications to the East Riding Coastal Change Pathfinder (ERCCP) Small Grants Fund. The fund is aimed at enabling individuals, groups and businesses in the East Riding to develop unique approaches to coastal erosion and coastal and/or estuarine flood risk management. This is one of the final stages of the ERCCP, a £1.2m project funded by the Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and delivered by the council since February 2010. In total, £100,000 is available through the Small Grants Fund and the final round will now close at 5pm on 18 May rather than 5pm on 30 April, as previously advertised. The extension is designed to give interested parties as much time as possible in which to submit applications, particularly as postal services will be affected by Bank Holidays. Under the terms of the fund, grants from £500 to a maximum of £30,000 can be awarded to schemes that promote coastal adaptation and coastal and/or estuarine flood resilience. Application forms and guidance notes can be downloaded from the council’s website, www.eastriding.gov.uk, until the closing date for applications, Friday 18 May. Hard copies of documents can also…

SKIPSEA : Coastal Change Drop-In Events

April 2, 2012
By

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is holding two coastal change drop-in events for members of the public and key stakeholders. These are at Skipsea Village Hall (Monday 16 April) and Aldbrough Village Hall (Wednesday 18 April). Both sessions will run from 3 to 7pm. The drop-ins are being held as one of the final stages of the East Riding Coastal Change Pathfinder (ERCCP). This 1.2 million project, funded by the Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), has provided more than 35 households with practical support for coastal change adaptation and relocation. The sessions will focus on the outcomes of the Pathfinder and the ways in which the council will seek to support vulnerable coastal communities in the future, for example by launching an East Riding Coastal Partnership and lobbying the Government for additional funding. Councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for rural issues and cultural services, said: “Coastal Pathfinder has made a real difference through the practical support and assistance that we have been able to provide for people most at risk to coastal erosion. “I want to stress that these drop-in sessions do not signal the end of the council’s commitment to communities in the East Riding…

Graham Stuart Encourages Rural Entrepreneurs To Bid For £60 Million in the Rural Economy Grant Scheme

March 6, 2012
By

Today Graham Stuart encouraged local businesses to apply for £60 million in Government grants to increase the strength and competitiveness of rural enterprise. Grants ranging from £25,000 to £1 million are available to support businesses focused on farm competitiveness, agri-food, tourism, forestry and micro enterprise. In a letter to colleagues, the Rt Hon Caroline Spelman, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs indicated the Government’s commitment to rural development. She also made it clear that this initiative is part of a broader £165 million package to unlock the economic potential of rural areas. Graham, the Beverley and Holderness MP, who is a long-standing supporter of rural interests and is launching the Rural Fair Share campaign to ensure a fairer funding settlement that better reflects the real needs of rural areas, said, “These grants are proof that this Government understands and is willing to invest in rural interests. Rural communities contribute a great deal to the economy and we must do more to support them in these difficult economic times. “40 percent of the costs of projects can be covered by this grant and that will go a long way towards helping many rural businesses to remain competitive.…

DRIFFIELD: National Award For Driffield Farm Watch

March 2, 2012
By

Humberside Police’s affiliated ‘Farm Watch’ has won the Annual Partner of the Year award for work at reducing Wildlife Crime in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Humberside Police nominated Gordon Calvert, from Partnership for Action Against Wildlife Crime (PAW) for the prestigious award, by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Gordon Calvert was the instigator in the resurrection of Farmwatch in the Humberside Policing area back in 2006, and his involvement in the campaign has reduced poaching over the last 5 years. Gordon has committed 100’s of hours of his time towards helping and supporting the Farm Watch cause and running a newly formed Farm Watch group in Driffield; resulting in a reduction in poaching in the East Riding of Yorkshire. In 2006, Farmwatch in Humberside was in decline, two groups had ceased operating and only one still had limited function. Incidents of poaching and associated crime were frequent and went un-resourced. The number of reported Wildlife crime incidents across the County placed Humberside in third place, only behind Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, nationally. Due to major night time poaching issues of deer being killed by dogs and day time Hare coursing in the North of the County,…

Graham Stuart ‘“Fantastic news for Cranswick Country Foods”

February 14, 2012
By

Local MP Graham Stuart today congratulated Cranswick Country Foods after the Food Standards Agency (FSA) found the plant fully compliant with Chinese import requirements for pork products. Graham visited Cranswick’s site in Preston last November and learned more about their £15 million upgrade to their facilities and how they have gained US Department of Agriculture approval and the ability to export all over Europe. Since that time the Beverley and Holderness MP has been determined to see the company get the support it needs to grow its business and develop more export markets around the world. In the first Prime Minister’s (PM) Question of 2012, Graham called on the PM to celebrate and protect the successful local pig sector. He also met with the Chairman of the FSA and arranged follow up meetings with ministers from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The Minister for Agriculture and Food, the Rt Hon Jim Paice MP, wrote to Graham last week confirming that the plant was found to be fully compliant with Chinese import requirements. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the FSA and Cranswick are now collaborating to finalise the necessary report to be submitted to the…
