George Osborne presented his Budget on Wednesday 20 March 2013. In his opening statement he set the scene for some of the new measures announced, stating ‘this is a Budget for people who aspire to work hard and get on’. Towards the end of last year the Government issued the majority of the clauses, in draft, of Finance Bill 2013 together with updates on consultations. The publication of the draft Finance Bill clauses is now an established way in which tax policy is developed, communicated and legislated. The Budget updates some of these previous announcements and also proposes further measures. Some of these changes apply from April 2013 and some take effect at a later date, so the timing needs to be carefully considered. Our summary focuses on the issues likely to affect you, your family and your business. To help you decipher what was said we have included our own comments. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us for advice. Main Budget tax proposals • Date set for increase in the personal allowance to £10,000. • New scheme for tax free childcare. • Further reduction in the main rate of corporation tax to 20%…

Police Remind People About The Use Of Social Media

December 3, 2012
By

As the interest and the use of social media grows increasingly popular Humberside Police are sending out a reminder to people to be careful with what they post on social media sites and also what pages they set up. Nationally there has been a recent increase in the number of cases where police have investigated messages, postings and images placed on Twitter and Facebook. These have in a number of cases been deemed offensive towards others and have at times had the potential to hinder on going criminal investigations. With this in mind, Police in Humberside are asking people not to set up Facebook groups with the sole or potential aim of causing offence to others and not to use the power of social media to verbally abuse others as you may find yourself subject to a criminal investigation. Detective Sergeant Dean Minter from the Crime Team in Scunthorpe said: “We respond to a number of complaints from people about postings via social-networking sites. “The power of social media means that what is written can often been seen by hundreds and at times thousands of people, which can end up on the front pages of national and local media, which…

November 22, 2012
By

A new regional campaign ‘Think B4U Drink’ was officially launched yesterday to Humberside. Yesterday Councillors, Chief Fire and Police Officers, along with Alcohol Misuse Workers and NHS staff were in attendance to understand how a range of agencies within the region; including Humberside Police, NHS, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Humberside Fire and Rescue and Safer Roads Humber are working together on an alcohol awareness campaign called ‘Think B4 U Drink’. Safe drinking is a priority for all agencies involved and this campaign is the perfect outlet for all organisations to get their safe drinking messages out there to our communities. Dr Tim Allison, Director of Public Health said at yesterday’s presentation: “Alcohol misuse is a major public health issue in the United Kingdom; it places a heavy burden on health and social care services, on the criminal justice system and on society as a whole. The problems associated with heavy drinking affect a large number of people across the social spectrum and lifespan. “Alcohol is now the second biggest risk factor for cancer after smoking. Alcohol consumption and obesity are the main factors that will make liver disease Britain’s biggest killer within the next five years. Overtaking cancer, strokes…

Two Men Plead Guilty At Beverley Magistrates Court

November 22, 2012
By

Azid Ahmed, the previous food business operator of Zolsha, in Bridgegate, Howden, and Mohammed Faisal, the licensee, have pleaded guilty to two food standards offences at Beverley Magistrates Court. The offences were in connection to the sale of branded vodka which was not of the substance demanded by the purchaser in that it was not the genuine product, contrary to Section 15 of the Food Safety Act 1990. The second offence was for failing to comply with the traceability requirements, contrary to regulations 4(c) of the General Food Regulations 2004. These offences were discovered during a routine food standard inspection, a sample of the vodka was submitted to the public analyst, who reported that the product was not the genuine brand and had been substituted with another product. Ahmed and Faisal could not demonstrate where the product had been purchased from and had no invoices for it. Businesses should have systems in place to prevent the occurrence of such offences and blatant disregard of the law is likely to result in prosecution. In this case, the natures of the offences were serious enough that it was in the public interest to initiate proceedings. The magistrate ordered Ahmed and Faisal to…

New regional campaign ‘Think B4U Drink’ is being officially launched next week to Humberside as new website is brought into action. Think B4U Drink (TB4UD) is a campaign run by a range of agencies within the region; including Humberside Police, NHS, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Humberside Fire and Rescue and Safer Roads Humber. Safe drinking is a priority for all agencies involved and this campaign is the perfect outlet for all organisations to get their safe drinking messages out there to our communities. For many of us, drinking with friends and family is one of life’s pleasures. We use alcohol to unwind, to celebrate, to have a laugh and to socialise, but alcohol can also have a negative side to it. Having too much to drink on a night out can not only give you a hang over but can leave you in very dangerous situations. Like getting into a fight, making you vulnerable to sexual assault, being tempted to drive home drunk or accidentally setting fire to the house making some supper. Drinking too much over a long time can also have long terms risk to your health, your relationships and your family. Throughout this significant summer of…

Coastal Safety Reminder

August 7, 2012
By

East Riding of Yorkshire boasts some of the most stunning coastline and safe bathing areas in the UK. Whilst none of the thousands of visitors to the area has reported any injury or near miss incidents this year, other coastal areas have been less fortunate. In conjunction with the ‘Explore the East Riding Coast’ brochure, which promotes a host of safe activities available along the 85km coastline (available on-line at www2.eastriding.gov.uk/leisure/tourism-and-attractions/coastal-attractions/east-riding-coast/safety-advice/ and in hard copy from tourist information centres in Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea), the council would also like to remind visitors that the natural beauty of the area does hide some natural phenomena which need to be treated with a degree of caution. To ensure that residents and tourists are able to fully enjoy the East Riding coast, the Council would remind people about potential safety issues on beaches and cliff tops. This follows recent coastal erosion losses in Mappleton, and landslips in the south of England. Large sections of the East Riding’s 85-kilometre coastline are affected by coastal erosion due to natural processes. Cliff losses linked to coastal erosion can occur at any time of the year and both visitors and residents are advised to take care on…

EAST YORKSHIRE : Don’t Lose Your Chance To Vote

July 24, 2012
By

Residents across the East Riding are being asked to complete and return canvass forms, which will ensure they are registered to vote in the Police and Crime Commissioner Elections, which take place on 15, November 2012. Due to this election, the annual canvass of electors has taken place earlier than usual and households should have already received canvass forms. Where forms have not yet been signed and returned, a red reminder form will soon be sent and if this is not completed then a canvasser will visit the property to get a response. If there are no changes to the information on the form, replies can be made on the internet, by telephone or by SMS. Details of how to do this are explained on the form. Now is an ideal opportunity to apply for a postal vote in preparation for the November elections. Those wishing for an application form should tick the postal vote box on the form, and further information will be sent. Nigel Pearson, electoral registration officer, said: “Registering to vote is quick and simple. “All you have to do is update the annual canvass form with the details of everyone who lives in the household and…
