Council’s Free Compost Giveaways

East Riding residents have just a few more chances to get free bags of compost which are being given away by East Riding of Yorkshire Council. The giveaways are taking place at: 16, May West Park, Goole, from 4pm 17, May Brantingham Park, Brantingham, from 4pm 20 May, old council depot, Grovehill Road, Beverley, from 2pm 22 May, Sport & Social Club, Pocklington, from 4pm 23 May, South Holderness School, Preston, from 4pm. Up to 80 tonnes of free soil improver, the composted contents of the brown bins is being given away, a total of up to 5,000 bags. Giveaways have already been held in Market Weighton, Hornsea, Bridlington and Withernsea. Each resident will be allowed two bags which will be put directly into the car boot by council staff so that residents do not need to do any lifting. Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said: “The compost giveaways are among the highlights of the gardening calendar for many of our residents. “The compost is from the garden waste and food waste our residents put in their brown bins many months ago, keeping it out of landfill. Pocklington To York Bus Service Extended

Pocklington To York Bus Service Extended

A temporary replacement bus service from Pocklington to York, secured last year by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, is to continue for another year. Temporary arrangements to run the X36 service until the end of this month will now be extended until March 2014, with the support of the council, parish and town councils. The bus has been operated by York Pullman since the former operator decided to withdraw the morning and afternoon part of the commercial service in September 2011. The temporary service was launched following a review undertaken by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the City of York Council, including full consultation with users and parish councils in the area. Nigel Rowe, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s group manager for transportation services, said sufficient funding has now been secured to operate the service for another year. The service will be part-funded by Pocklington Town Council as well as the parish councils of Seaton Ross, Bielby, Newton on Derwent and Sutton on Derwent and the anticipated support of the City of York Council. Driffield Leisure Centre Tone Zone Refurbishment

Work will start later this month on a £190,000 refurbishment of Driffield Leisure Centre’s Tone Zone fitness suite, which will then include the latest Matrix exercise equipment. The Tone Zone fitness suite will close from Monday, 18 March and reopen on Saturday, 30 March. Swimming facilities at the centre will be unaffected and extra exercise classes are being programmed. During the closure period, gym members can access facilities at any East Riding Leisure Centre, with the nearest centres at Bridlington, Pocklington, Hornsea and Beverley. Councillor Richard Burton, cabinet portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The start of this work is excellent news and represents a significant investment by the council in improving our services to the people of Driffield. “The new equipment, redecoration and carpeting highlight our commitment to provide high-quality sports and leisure facilities that meet the aspirations of local communities and encourage residents to be more active, more often, supporting the Government Change 4 Life agenda and the council’s responsibility for public health.” The new Tone Zone will include treadmills, cross trainers, cycles and weight training equipment as well as new free weights, benches and stretching area.
