The Longcroft Project

November 26, 2012
By

Described as “An exciting and innovative proposal to provide much-needed new housing, local services and a new, state-of-the-art secondary school for Beverley” The Longcroft Project is a development on a massive scale. Should plans be approved then 800 new homes and other facilities that include a petrol station will be constructed on 140 acres of prime land that is currently occupied by Longcroft School. With the development comes questions of the impact so many new homes will have on the already overstretched resources and the added pressure of more traffic on the congested roads. If each of these homes were to have one car each, when placed nose to tail they would stretch for just short of 3km or just over one mile in old money! Whatever the outcome and how ever you may feel about this development personally, I can only urge you to look closely at the proposals yourself and make an informed choice about it, you never know you may even find you like what the Longcroft Project are putting on the table. On the plus side Beverley gets a new school which the developers say will save taxpayers a massive £25m – that sounds a lot…

Two brave Humberside officers nominated for a national bravery award

October 17, 2012
By

Two brave Police Constables responded to reports of a stolen car and ended up risking their lives to save the thief from a blazing inferno. PCs Hermann and Caulfield were on patrol in Hull city centre when they received a call to say that a car had been stolen from a nearby residential street. Later that same night the officers spotted the reported vehicle in a narrow passageway located at the back of a row of houses. Closer inspection revealed that the interior of the car was ablaze and both doors appeared to be closed. The car was wedged into the passageway so the officers called for the fire brigade to attend the fire. As PC Hermann approached the vehicle, the fire flashed to full intensity and all of a sudden the driver’s door burst open. Even from a distance of about half a metre, the heat was intense and caused the officer to step away. However, PC Hermann spotted an unconscious man, later learned to be 22 year old Luke Little, slumped in the driver’s seat of the car. The officer called on his colleague PC Caulfield to assist him and the officers pulled the door open as far…

800-hay-bales---size-of-a-s

In the last two months there have been three incidents where a number of hay bales have been set alight. Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue Service are advising farmers and members of the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Shortly before 2100hrs on Thursday 04 October, about 800 stacks of bales in a field where set alight on High Street, North Ferriby. This was a large blaze, very close to a tree line and Ferriby High Road; leading to the road being closed for nearly 11 hours and the farm being thousands of pounds out of pocket. Previously last month; at 0230hrs on Sunday 23 September a bale of hay was set on fire on the B1230, between High Hunsley and Walkington and just after 0300hrs on Sunday 12 August a very large square bail was set alight in the middle of Gibson Lane, Melton, North Ferriby. It is believed the bail to pushed or rolled deliberately into the middle of the road, before being set alight. The police are working closely with Humberside Fire and Rescue Service to investigate these incidents and are appealing for the community to come forward with any information they…

Chimney Fire Safety Week 2012

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service

In support of Chimney Fire Safety Week (10 – 26 September), firefighters are urging residents who have open fires in their home, to have their chimneys swept in preparation for the colder months. Over the last 12 months Humberside Fire and Rescue Service has attended over 100 chimney related fires, many of which could be easily avoided. Daryl Oprey, Head of Safety at Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “I urge people who have open fires in their home to have their chimney swept at least once a year as poorly maintained chimneys can increase the risk of a fire breaking out. “Chimney Fire Safety Week is an ideal time to get chimneys swept before the colder nights set in and helps ensure everyone in the household is safe from possible chimney related fires.” Chimney fires usually start when high temperatures or flames from a very hot fire spread into the outlet or flue and the combustible deposits inside ignite. This can cause the fire spread into the roof space or floor cavity and can cause extensive damage, as well as endangering lives. Following these few simple steps can reduce the risk of a fire breaking out: • Chimneys must…

Operation Witch Hazel Recover £25000 Worth of Stolen Diesel

August 20, 2012
By

Fuel Theft operation leads to successful recovery of large quantity of stolen fuel. In the early hours of Saturday morning (18 August 2012) traffic officers attempted to pull over two 8 tonne flat bed lorries which were driving in tandem in Pollington, near Goole. Both lorries failed to stop when officers signalled for their attention, despite this neither lorry slowed down and a pursuit encountered along the M62 westbound. After several miles of police pursuit, a stinger and the use of the force helicopter, one of the lorries, which is believed to have been on false plates was abandoned with the driver running into a nearby field. Officers caught up with the driver and arrested him for theft of diesel. The second lorry which was being followed by the force helicopter was seen to make a U-turn in the road after a stringer device was used on the tyres of the lorry and was stopped minutes later by officers and also arrested for theft of diesel. The vehicles which were specially adapted with a hole in the floor collectively contained an estimated £25,000 worth of stolen diesel. The suspects were brought into custody, questioned by detectives from Beverley CID and…

Stop And Check Operation Improves Road Safety INn The East Riding

August 16, 2012
By

Sixty five vehicles were stopped during last week’s stop and check operation undertaken by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Streetscene Enforcement Team along with colleagues from trading standards, Humberside Police, HM Revenue & Customs and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). Stop and check operations take place at various locations throughout the East Riding across the year. During the latest operation, which took place near Snaith, vehicle ‘pull in’ points were set up and drivers directed to stop while a variety of vehicle related checks were carried out. Of the 65 vehicles stopped, Humberside Police issued 13 vehicle defect rectification forms, two non-endorsable fixed penalty tickets, five verbal warnings regarding vehicle maintenance and one offence on behalf of DVLA for no tax. Two vehicles had intelligence markers on for other police forces that enabled Humberside Police to pass information on that may assist with detecting crimes in other areas. HM Revenue & Customs officers also dipped 58 petrol tanks in efforts to detect red diesel, the coloured dye indicating that the fuel cannot be used in vehicles travelling on the public highway. The excise duty is reduced on red diesel and its use is limited to agricultural vehicles and…
