Hull Collegiate School Visit Ogino In Beverley

As children we are taught not to play with our food but pupils from Hull Collegiate School were recently asked to ignore that advice on a recent school trip to support their learning experience of Modern Foreign Languages. Year 5 pupils from the school were shown how to make sushi at East Yorkshires only Japanese Restaurant Ogino. Owned by Rieko and Julian Ogino-Stamford, the couple welcomed the pupils into their restaurant to teach them how to prepare these artistic and very tasty creations. The head chef Toshimasa, who has cooked for many famous people said; “It was exciting teaching the children not only how to make the sushi, but showing them just how tasty and healthy it can be! The kids seemed to have really enjoyed making the sushi and then of course, eating what they had made. We do hope they have gone away knowing a little bit more about Japan’s cultural background and the type of food they eat.” Modern Foreign Languages is taught at Hull Collegiate School in a very unique and innovative way to other schools. It was found that pupils learning languages at the Senior school sometimes lacked motivation as they may have studied French,…

Families Urged To Ensure Children And Young People Are Protected Against Measles

East Riding Local Plan

Public health experts in East Yorkshire are urging parents to ensure that their children are fully vaccinated against measles. The move comes as cases of the disease reported across England and Wales continue to be at the highest levels seen since 2004. In line with trends across the country, the number of cases of measles is rising in North Yorkshire and the Humber, including the East Riding of Yorkshire. Since the beginning of January 2013, 80 suspected cases of measles have been reported across North Yorkshire and the Humber area (28 of which have been laboratory confirmed). By comparison, 29 suspected cases of the disease were reported in the same area between January and March the previous year, 2012 (none of which were laboratory confirmed). In response, public health experts in the East Riding of Yorkshire are urging parents to ensure their children have received two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Dr Tim Allison, Director of Public Health for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Despite the recent national increase across the UK, overall measles is now relatively rare because a safe and effective vaccination – the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) – protects against it.…

How Safe Is Your Limousine?

How Safe Is Your Limousine?

As the senior school prom season arrives, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Licensing Team is urging parents and head teachers to check that any stretched limousine being booked for impending prom nights has been properly checked and licensed. Previous checks have found that unlicensed limos were being used, with some being uninsured as a result and others found to be serving alcohol to under 18s in the vehicle, which is an offence under the Licensing Act 2003. The licensing team has issued advice to all senior schools in the area asking them to warn parents and teachers of the dangers of using unlicensed vehicles for the forthcoming school proms. The law was changed 6years ago so that stretched limousines had to be licensed. This was done in the interests of passenger safety. Licensing of these vehicles and the use of vetting procedures provides safeguards and protection for the passengers using them. To get a licence with the council the drivers are assessed for competence, having the correct licence and being medically fit. The drivers are also screened by the Disclosure and Barring Service to an enhanced level for any previous convictions or serious allegations to ensure they are fit to…

East Riding Local Plan

East Riding of Yorkshire Council will host a public exhibition at Driffield Community Centre, West Garth, on Tuesday, 16 April, 10am-4pm, to explain proposals for remodelling Kings Mill Special School, for which the council has applied for planning approval. Representatives of the school and the council’s design team will be on hand to explain the project and answer any questions. Councillors Barbara Hall and Symon Fraser will also be in attendance as will governors of the school. The exhibition is open to parents, neighbours and the general public and provides an opportunity for people to provide constructive feedback. They can also learn how to respond to the planning authority once the project comes online on the council’s website. Dave Waudby, head of infrastructure and facilities at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Kings Mill is a thriving and popular school for children with special needs and sometimes complex learning difficulties. It has been at the heart of Driffield for about 50 years, but draws children from a wide catchment area of rural East Riding. “The school buildings are too small for the numbers of children currently on roll and there is a long waiting list. “The project would see a…

E-safety Award For East Riding Primary School

An East Riding primary school has been recognised for their commitment to e-safety after becoming the first school in Yorkshire to receive a national award. Anlaby Acre Heads Primary School is one of just 47 schools in the country to be awarded the 360 degree safe e-safety mark after their e-safety provision was inspected by representatives from the South West Grid for Learning. After meeting with staff, pupils, parents and carers as well as governors, assessors found that the school provided a high level of protection for users through physical aspects of technology as well as education. The report said: “There is a very pro-active e-safety team successfully led by ICT subject leader, Michelle Radge, and there is a clear commitment to e-safety by the governors, senior leadership team, staff, children and all members of the school community, including parents. “The school’s technical support provider, Primary Tec, provides a robust and effective infrastructure that is effective in ensuring the e-safety of users within the school.” Lead assessor for the 360 degree safe e-safety mark, Ron Richards, congratulated the school on its success and said: “It is reassuring to know the school has put a lot of thought and effort into…

Raleigh Helps To Get The Wheels Moving In The East Riding

Since October 2012, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Road Safety Team has been working very closely with a number of primary and secondary schools across the authority, promoting cycling and gaining momentum in delivering the Cycling Friendly School Award. The aim of the award is to create a cycle-friendly environment to encourage more teachers and children to cycle both for leisure and to and from school. The award also helps each school identify and overcome any barriers to cycling, such as a need for additional storage, enhanced training or developing practical skills. East Riding of Yorkshire Council is joining forces with Raleigh, one of the oldest bicycle companies in the world, to help this happen. Raleigh is supporting this new initiative by donating bikes and helmets as competition prizes for schools taking part in the award. Councillor Symon Fraser, cabinet portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Having Raleigh’s support for the awards is a huge bonus. Raleigh’s willingness to assist can only help ensure the continued success of the initiative and hopefully an increase in cycling in the region. The council will be offering additional training to any pupil, teacher or parent…

Ensuring Quality In Child And Adolescent Mental Health Services

January 25, 2013
By
NHS East Riding

Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council are actively seeking views of young people, their carers and parents on plans to enhance local specialist mental health services for children and young people. There are approximately 135,000 children and young people aged 0- 19 in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. From time to time all children and young people will have emotional problems that affect their wellbeing, and, for most, these problems are short-lived and easily resolved with the right support from friends, family and others, including health, social care and education professionals. For a small number of young people the problems are more severe and more specialist mental health assessment, support and sometimes treatment is required. These problems include for example; depression and anxiety, behaviour disorders, eating disorders, psychosis, and self-harming. The review of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) has been prompted by feedback from service users and providers that access and waiting times within the service could be improved. Young people, their parents and carers will therefore be invited to share their views and experience of the service. Feedback on the re-design proposals will also…

Police Crack Down On Drugs Over Festive Period

December 25, 2012

Humberside Police

The party season is now in full swing, and whilst most people enjoy themselves by over indulging in the festive spirit by perhaps consuming excess food and drink, the temptation to try drugs or dabble in them can be too much for some to overcome. Humberside Police, Hull City Council and NHS Hull are working together to make people aware of the dangers and symptoms of drugs, particularly mephedrone, also known as MCAT. The partner agencies will also provide up-to-date information on how and where to access support agencies and networks which are available for everyone, from first time users, recreational users, addicts or concerned family and friends. Police Officers and Staff in Hull held a week of action in October, 2012, which supported on-going work being carried out in schools, colleges and in the wider community, which targets criminals, but educates people on how mephedrone and other substances can have a detrimental effect on not just the user’s lives, but also the loved ones around them. Parents of school children in secondary schools across the city received a letter from Ch Insp Dave Houchin, which gave information on what the drug is, how it is taken, signs and symptoms,…
