Families Urged To Ensure Children And Young People Are Protected Against Measles

East Riding Local Plan

Public health experts in East Yorkshire are urging parents to ensure that their children are fully vaccinated against measles. The move comes as cases of the disease reported across England and Wales continue to be at the highest levels seen since 2004. In line with trends across the country, the number of cases of measles is rising in North Yorkshire and the Humber, including the East Riding of Yorkshire. Since the beginning of January 2013, 80 suspected cases of measles have been reported across North Yorkshire and the Humber area (28 of which have been laboratory confirmed). By comparison, 29 suspected cases of the disease were reported in the same area between January and March the previous year, 2012 (none of which were laboratory confirmed). In response, public health experts in the East Riding of Yorkshire are urging parents to ensure their children have received two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Dr Tim Allison, Director of Public Health for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Despite the recent national increase across the UK, overall measles is now relatively rare because a safe and effective vaccination – the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) – protects against it.…

Fabulous Food Is The Reason For Le Tour’s Yorkshire Grand Depart

Fabulous Food Is The Reason For Le Tour’s Yorkshire Grand Depart

It’s not the dales, hills or a picturesque backdrop for the yellow jersey that led Le Tour de France to choose Yorkshire for the start if its 2014 race. Great Yorkshire grub is the reason the world’s biggest annual sporting event is detouring to God’s own county, says Yorkshire Food Finder founder Sue Nelson. “Yorkshire is the only county in England with a larder that betters France for quantity, quality and tradition. So where else could Le Tour possibly start?” says Sue, whose guided gourmet tour company puts foodies in touch with the county’s top producers and chefs. “We’re the biggest beer, rapeseed, pork and seafood producer in the UK, and when it comes to beer, Yorkshire is a frothy head above the rest with more than 130 real ale brewers producing more than 920 different beers.” Sue, who is developing a special Yorkshire Food Finder trail around Le Tour’s Grand Depart on July 5 and 6, says, like France, Yorkshire is home to thousands of talented artisan food and drink producers. “They’re creating fabulous food but without the legendary status enjoyed by producers on the other side of the channel!” says Sue. “Our cheese, for example, is spectacular –…

First Time Buyers Reap The Benefits Of Buying Off Plan In York

First time buyers Lauren Foreman and Rob Brotherton did just that, and are delighted with their new home at Linden Homes’ 1877 development in York. Having moved from Leeds, the couple took advantage of the government-backed FirstBuy scheme – requiring just a five per cent deposit to secure their dream home. Track design engineer Rob (25) who works in York said: “We saw the development advertised on the Internet and although we weren’t actually looking to move so soon, we couldn’t turn it down. We were looking for a new build, but there were none in the area that fitted our requirements. We had given up hope on new builds in York, until Linden Homes came along.” Having looked at other Linden Homes developments and properties in the area, the couple decided to reserve from plan – with location forming a key requirement. Customer service advisor Lauren (22) added: “We thought the homes looked really well built, and the location is perfect – everything you would like near your home is within walking distance. “We weren’t really looking to move so soon, mainly because we didn’t have a 10 per cent deposit, so to be able to benefit from FirstBuy…

Economic Development Strategy Launched

Economic Development Strategy Launched

A strategy has been launched to promote sustainable economic development over the next four years in the East Riding. The East Riding of Yorkshire Economic Development Strategy was launched by the East Riding of Yorkshire Local Strategic Partnership’s Economy and Skills Action Group at Brough Business Centre. The strategy sets out a long-term vision, strategic framework and an overview of the activities the Local Strategic Partnership will seek to promote between 2012 and 2016. The impact of the global financial crisis during 2007-2008 had wide ranging implications for the East Riding’s economy. Many businesses have seen trading conditions become more difficult, with demand falling and access to funding becoming more constrained. Delivery of economic development activity has also changed with a greater focus on local priority setting through Local Enterprise Partnerships, a removal of regional structures and competitive funding replacing programmed public sector funds. This strategy is sensitive to the current difficult market conditions and advocates activity to build the economic resilience of the East Riding and its businesses and workforce. Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic development, tourism and rural issues at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “In spite of the uncertain economic climate, there are…

Linden Homes Helps Mark A Milestone For Housing Provider In York

A Partnership between developer Linden Homes and North Yorkshire housing provider Broadacres has reached a new milestone. The award-winning house builder has helped the housing association mark its 20th anniversary by handing over one of its new homes at the recently launched 1877 development in Ouseacres. The property – one of 14 discounted and affordable rented homes at the site – will be the housing association’s first in York, and continues its flourishing partnership with Linden Homes. The official handover took place at the 1877 development, where a number of the 57 new two, three and four-bedroom homes have already been sold from plan. Broadacres Housing Association provides a comprehensive range of services to approximately 5,500 homes in North Yorkshire, and 1877 will be its third Linden Homes development, after links with sites at Riccall and South Milford. Steve Towers, managing director of Broadacres Housing Association, said: “Working in partnership with Linden Homes we are delighted to take handover of our first affordable home in York. All 14 homes will be let to local people in housing need, ensuring they can remain in the heart of a city where it can otherwise be very expensive to live.” Linden Homes managing director Ian Hessay said: “The handing over of our…
