East Yorkshire Council

The council is now underway with a £2 million surface dressing programme that will see around 650,000 square metres of highway resurfaced between now and August. Work began last week on sections of the network in Holderness and this week sees maintenance teams working nights on the A1079 at Arras Hill, near Market Weighton, and the A1035 Tickton Bypass, so as to minimise disruption to motorists and the travelling public. Surface dressing forms part of the council’s proactive approach to the maintenance of the 3,500km of highway network in the East Riding and takes place every year on both urban and rural roads. Surface dressing has four main purposes: to provide texture and skid resistance to an existing surface, to seal a road against water, to stop disintegration and to provide a uniform appearance for a patched road. Councillor Chris Matthews, cabinet portfolio holder for infrastructure, highways and emergency planning at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Ensuring the roads and infrastructure of the East Riding, as a whole, is in the best possible order long term is a top priority for the council. “Surface dressing provides a value for money and proactive approach by sealing roads, reducing reactive repair…

By

In support of Road Safety Week (19 – 25 November) Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is urging drivers to take extra care. Over the last twelve months the Service has attended over 400 road traffic collisions (RTCs) on the regions roads. The week also marks the official launch of the Think B 4 U Drink campaign in the East Riding, a multi-agency initiative involving Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Humberside Police, the NHS, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Safer Roads Humber. Each of the agencies involved in the campaign is asking members of the public to consider the effects of alcohol, from health consequences, anti-social behaviour and the increased risk of having a cooking related fire after drinking alcohol through to the dangers of drinking and driving. Louise Marritt, who is the road safety team leader for the Service, said “This campaign brings together a number of agencies that see the effects of alcohol in a number of different, and sometimes unexpected, ways. By working together we’re able to combine our resources and reach many more people and show the combined effect of alcohol on each of our organisations and on individuals.” Bad weather conditions also contribute to RTCs…

EAST YORKSHIRE : Statement of Community Involvement

September 24, 2012
By

The Council has recently published the Draft Statement of Community Involvement for public consultation. The Statement of Community Involvement sets out how the community and public can get involved in the preparation of the Local Plan, which will set planning policies and show how the East Riding will develop and grow in the next 15 years. It identifies who will be involved, when and how. It also sets out how the public will be consulted when a planning application is submitted. The Council adopted the first Statement of Community Involvement in 2007 and it is now necessary to update the document. This is because there have been a number of changes to the way that planning documents are prepared and the Council has been able to consider feedback from public consultation exercises that have taken place. With the publication of a new Draft Statement of Community Involvement, the community now has an opportunity to let us know their views on how we intend to consult them. The consultation period will close on Monday, 5th November. You can respond through our website or by returning a response form. The document is available to view on line at: http://eastriding.limehouse.co.uk/portal/ Paper copies of…

Benefit And Money Advice Service – Local Housing Allowance Liaison Officer

September 20, 2012
By

The Local Housing Allowance liaison officer is part of the benefit and money advice service and is available to help people who receive housing benefit that will be affected by the benefit cap and other changes resulting from the Welfare Reform Bill. Changes from April 2013 include a cap on the total amount of benefit that working age people can receive. This will mean that workless households should no longer receive more in benefits than the average earnings of working households. It is important that claimants potentially affected by the cap are aware of the impact it could have on them. The cap won’t apply to households where a partner or any dependent child qualify for Working Tax Credit, or receive certain benefits such as Disability Living Allowance, Industrial Injuries Benefits and War Pensions. Those who are affected by the cap will have their housing benefit reduced before any other benefit that they receive. They could avoid or reduce deductions to their housing benefit if they: * negotiate the rent to a more affordable amount; * move to cheaper accommodation, if possible; * become entitled to an exempting benefit if the qualifying conditions are met. This is where the Local…
