Young people across the East Riding are being offered the opportunity to volunteer in their community and earn valuable UCAS points during the summer holidays. Last summer, the National Citizen Scheme (NSC) proved so successful with young people in Bridlington and Beverley that it is being extended this year to include Year 11 students in Haltemprice and south Holderness as well. The NCS, which is run by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s youth support service and funded by young people’s charity, Catch 22, offers a fun but challenging personal development programme during the summer. Participants also have the chance to take the ASDAN community volunteering qualification to gain 30 UCAS points. The scheme involves an introduction period followed by a residential outward bound team building exercise and another in the area where the young people live. Last year, the groups in Beverley and Bridlington took part in a variety of fund-raising and community activities, including raising money for the RNLI and a community garden project.
