By

Two Hull teenagers will be taking part in a House of Commons debate this week. Evie Snee (17) and Tom Shearsmith (15) from Hull will join over 300 elected Members of Youth Parliament (MYP) at a national debate in the House of Commons on Friday 23 November 2012, to decide the UK Youth Parliament’s priority campaign for 2013. Evie and Tom became members of the Youth Parliament after being elected at a Hull Young People’s Parliament. The debate, chaired by the Speaker of the House of Commons Rt. Hon John Bercow MP and broadcast live on BBC Parliament, will focus on the top five issues chosen by more than 250,000 young people in the UK Youth Parliament’s Make Your Mark ballot earlier this year. At the end of the five debates, Members of Youth Parliament will vote to decide which issue will become their national campaign for 2013. Evie and Tom, said: “As the MYP’s for Hull, we feel privileged to be able to take the views of young people of the city directly to Westminster. We think it’s important for young people’s voices to be heard and to have an influence on issues that are important to us.” The…

Local MP hosts work experience student from Social Mobility Foundation

November 20, 2012
By

Graham Stuart, the MP for Beverley and Holderness, hosted Aisha, a student from Wembley High Technology College for work experience during the October half term holiday. Aisha is part of the Social Mobility Foundation, which provides high achieving sixth-form students from low-income backgrounds with E-Mentors, summer internships, and university application sessions to enable them to reach their full potential. The week began with a tour of the Palace of Westminster, which gave her an insight into how Parliament works and helped her to find her way around the maze of corridors. During her week in Graham’s office she monitored activities in Parliament, drafted a news release and helped to write briefings. She also attended an Education Select Committee meeting on careers guidance for young people, as well as watching debates in both the House of Commons and House of Lords from the public galleries. Reflecting at the end of her week, Aisha said it had been, “Interesting, beneficial and adventurous. “It broadened my understanding of politics, giving me a better perception of how politics works and how decisions are made.” Graham said, ““It was good to have Aisha in the office last week. I am really pleased to be able…

MP supports Scrap Metal Regulation Bill

October 2, 2012
By

Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart has written to Richard Ottaway MP in support of his Private Members Bill to re-regulate the Scrap Metal Industry. Mr Stuart said, “Criminals cannot be allowed to continue to run amok across the countryside helping themselves to other people’s possessions. This Bill, which is currently on its way through the House of Commons, will see both static and mobile scrap metal dealers licensed via the local authority and a ban on all cash payments for scrap metal sales. “It is sad that the only way we can stop these crimes is by imposing greater regulation on industry but we must eliminate the opportunity for thieves to off-load their stolen goods and reap rewards at the expense of others. “There have been numerous instances of metal theft across the constituency with the victims often being places of worship in listed buildings with little or no resources to rectify the damage done by the criminals. Communities are now being further disadvantaged by an increase in insurance premiums for their buildings to cover them against these crimes. I have also heard about businesses whose tools have been stolen for scrap, and train passengers delayed…

A planning application has been submitted to Hull City Council for building the Reality Energy Centre in the Port of Hull, a £130 million development project producing 49 Mega Watts of ‘green’ electricity and bringing significant employment opportunities to the area. The application has been lodged by the project’s developer, Real Ventures (Hull) Ltd. The Centre will provide between 200 and 250 jobs during a 30 month long construction period and 35 long term, permanent posts during the plant’s subsequent 25 year operational lifespan. Subject to planning permission being granted, work would begin on site early in the New Year. The plant will be fired by woody biomass fuel, imported by ship from sustainable sources directly to the Centre’s three hectare site at King George Dock. It will conform to strict standards for controlling flue gas emissions and noise. Councillor Steven Bayes, Portfolio Holder for Economic Regeneration and Employment said: “The news that Real Ventures has submitted its planning application for its Biomass plant – a key milestone in the process – is a step forward and if approved will further reinforce Hull’s position at the forefront of the low carbon economy. “Hull is rapidly developing as both an offshore…

Graham Stuart

Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, John Hayes, will visit local colleges this week. Graham Stuart, the MP for Beverley and Holderness, who is also Chairman of the House of Commons Education Select Committee, invited the Minister to the area to learn more about the challenges facing local colleges and what they are doing to improve education and training for people in the East Riding. Graham said, “The economy is struggling and the Eurozone is on the brink but local people are working hard to build their skills and make sure that we remain a vibrant and successful part of the country. I am determined to make sure that local experiences, difficulties and successes in East Yorkshire inform national policy making. That’s why I have repeatedly invited John Hayes to come and visit. He follows the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove and the Minister for Schools, Nick Gibb in seeing the provision we have here. “Our colleges do a first class job but could do more. By bringing the Minister for Skills to the area I hope we can explain the particular issues local providers face. We want every student to have a choice…

Local MPs Celebrate Victory With The Caravan Industry

Yesterday Graham Stuart, the MP for Beverley and Holderness, organised a meeting between local MPs and caravan manufacturers at ABI in Beverley to celebrate the announcement that the proposed increase in VAT on static holiday caravans will be cut by 75 percent and delayed until April 2013. Graham then toured the factory, talked to staff, and thanked them for all their efforts in collecting signatures for the public petition presented to the House of Commons on May 22nd. The meeting was attended by the Rt Hon David Davis MP, Rt Hon Greg Knight MP, Andrew Percy MP and local caravan manufacturers including representatives from the Swift Group, Carnaby Caravans, Victory Leisure Homes, Delta Caravans, and Europa Caravans. Graham said “It was a great opportunity to celebrate with caravan industry representatives, talk to workers on the shop floor, and highlight what an important and successful industry this is for this area. It’s been a highly effective campaign thanks to the industry, caravan owners, Councils and MPs all working together, cross-party, to bring about a positive result.” “Government ministers have confirmed that they have no plans to revisit the rate of VAT so the industry can plan on the basis of a…

MPs collect thousands of signatures opposing the caravan tax

May 24, 2012
By

This week MPs from East Yorkshire and across the UK formally submitted a public petition in the House of Commons opposing the imposition of VAT on static holiday caravans. Last night petitions were presented on behalf of 64 constituencies, with more expected to filter in today. Graham Stuart submitted more than 4,000 signatures on behalf of the people of Beverley and Holderness, as well as petitions in the name of a number of other constituencies. They all emphasised the negative impact the caravan tax will have on jobs and growth. The local MP said, “It is critical that we continue to draw attention to the impact the caravan tax will have on jobs, especially as Britain’s largest caravan manufacturer, Willerby Holiday Homes, has just announced plans for 350 redundancies in anticipation of the tax rise in October. “Imposing VAT on static caravans is not logical and is not fair. Someone buying a £240,000 second home will pay £2,400 in stamp duty. Someone buying a £13,000 second home that is a static caravan will pay £2,600 for a building purchased and used in exactly the same way. It is unsupportable.” The formal presentation of the public petition is the latest step…

Public petition opposing caravan tax to be presented to Parliament next week

May 16, 2012
By

Graham Stuart is encouraging all those opposed to the caravan tax to sign the public petition urging the Government to change its position and scrap the tax in advance of a presentation to Parliament on Tuesday 22nd May. The petition, which notes that the caravan tax would cost jobs and not generate significant revenue, has garnered tens of thousands of signatures from constituencies across the UK. Graham said “So far I have received more than three thousand signatures from the residents of Beverley and Holderness and I know my colleagues have accepted many more from their own patches as well. “I hope we can collect as many signatures as possible to send a strong message to Government about how widespread the opposition to this tax increase is.” The public petition is just one tool in the cross-party campaign pressing the Government to end plans for a caravan tax. It comes after Graham organised a meeting between MPs and caravan manufacturers in Beverley, led a delegation to the Treasury, tabled an amendment to the Finance Bill, secured an additional debate in the House of Commons, tabled a motion opposing the tax, and met with Chancellor George Osborne to press the issue.…
