Michael Wins Regional Award

An adult learner from East Riding College has won an award in recognition of the progress he has made during his studies. Michael Norfolk, 53, from Hull, became the Open College Network (OCN) Learner Journey Award Winner as part of this year’s Adult Learners’ Week Awards. He was presented with his award by John Lawton, chief executive of the OCN Yorkshire and the Humber, at a ceremony at the Tiled Hall in Leeds, along with other award winners from the Yorkshire and Humber region. Michael said: “It was a great honour to receive this award and to be recognised for the progress I’ve made during my studies at the College. “When the tutor told the class that at week six we needed to do a five-minute speech I nearly died. But come week six I was fine, due to the confidence I gained through the tutor.” Michael is part of a 900 person redundancy program at BAE Systems in Brough. He left school at 15 with few qualifications, eventually becoming an operator where he now works. He began his studies at the College with Trades Union Congress union representative qualifications through the Open College Network (OCN), and is currently completing…

March 30, 2012
By

HFR Solutions, a community interest company (CIC) set up by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) is the first in the UK to win a contract offering on-site emergency service cover to a local private company, Tata Steel. All surplus made by HFR Solutions will be put back into the community to fund safety initiatives. The idea of a CIC allows HFR Solutions to offer a wide range of chargeable services to private customers with any surplus being put straight back into the community to fund safety initiatives. HFR Solutions has won the contract to offer emergency service cover for Tata Steel’s Scunthorpe site. 24-hour cover will be maintained 365 days a year from an on-site fire station crewed by HFRS personnel. Dene Sanders, Deputy Chief Fire Officer and a Director of HFR Solutions said: “This is a very exciting opportunity for us as it could lead the way for us to gain future contracts and for other fire and rescue services to do the same. The requirements of Tata Steel are very specialised and it is a great testament to our personnel that we provide the skills needed to fulfil their requirements. Should this type of project prove successful…
