October 26, 2012

The three day event held at the ExCel London (18 – 20 October) saw Firefighters from across the globe take part in adrenaline packed challenges and daring rescues, all competing to see which country has the worlds top rescuers. The event provided the opportunity for firefighters from as far a field as Australia, Ghana and South Africa came to London to practice the vital rescue and first aid skills needed at the scene of serious incidents, like road traffic collisions. Firefighter, Shaun Rudland from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, competed in the trauma exercises along with Andy Wallace from Yorkshire Ambulance Service. The pair came fourth beating off competition from some of the most highly trained trauma teams across the world. Nick Granger, Head of operational response for Humberside Fire and Rescue, said: “Shaun and Andy performed superbly over three days with a number of highly challenging scenarios, they remained unfazed and breezed through the qualification rounds. “They held their nerve on the final challenge where the scenario had four people including unborn child trapped in a car. Humberside Fire & Rescue Service’s (HFRS) annual Community Awards, which celebrate members of staff; partner organisations; and the public for their contributions to the community and acts of courage, took place last night (Thursday 27 September) at a glittering awards ceremony held at the Country Park Inn, Hessle. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Local Hero Award, sponsored by DFDS Seaways, which is voted for by members of the public. The award was won by Gareth Cooke from Hull who saved a neighbour from their burning house with his quick-thinking and athleticism. Gareth heard a man shouting for help and scaled a six foot wall and jumped between roofs to reach him. He then attempted to save two more people before the fire service stopped him for his own safety. The award for the Young Person of the Year was won by 15-year-ol Amy Sellers from Bridlington. Amy made a 999 call and remained calm which may have saved her and her gran’s lives. Following the instructions of the control operator Amy helped her 85-year-old gran out of a window before following her to safety. Another winner on the night was the Hull Sprinkler Partnership which…

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service

In support of Chimney Fire Safety Week (10 – 26 September), firefighters are urging residents who have open fires in their home, to have their chimneys swept in preparation for the colder months. Over the last 12 months Humberside Fire and Rescue Service has attended over 100 chimney related fires, many of which could be easily avoided. Daryl Oprey, Head of Safety at Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “I urge people who have open fires in their home to have their chimney swept at least once a year as poorly maintained chimneys can increase the risk of a fire breaking out. “Chimney Fire Safety Week is an ideal time to get chimneys swept before the colder nights set in and helps ensure everyone in the household is safe from possible chimney related fires.” Chimney fires usually start when high temperatures or flames from a very hot fire spread into the outlet or flue and the combustible deposits inside ignite. This can cause the fire spread into the roof space or floor cavity and can cause extensive damage, as well as endangering lives. Following these few simple steps can reduce the risk of a fire breaking out: • Chimneys must…
