HULL : Luke adds golden touch to Christmas lights switch on

With one week to go to the Hull Christmas lights switch on, Hull City Council is pleased to announce Luke Campbell will join the Lord Mayor Councillor Brown to turn on the lights. Thursday 22 November sees the big switch-on of the city centre’s festive illuminations. David Burns from BBC Radio Humberside will be hosting the evening between 5.30pm and 7pm, with the light switch on at 6.45pm. The countdown to the turning on of the lights will take place in Queen Victoria Square, with Luke Campbell and the Lord Mayor of Hull and Admiral of the Humber, Councillor Danny Brown, turning on the lights from the City Hall balcony to light up the city centre. Trees in Queen Victoria Square and Trinity Square will be lit up along with some new lighting in and around Queen Victoria Square, Brook Street and Prospect Street, providing an array of colours through the city centre. There will be a variety of traditional family entertainment and music including a guest appearance from classical pop quartet Ti Amero, singing traditional carols. DRIFFIELD : Paralympic Lantern To Visit Harvest Food Festival

As the London 2012 Paralympic Games enter their second week and GB athletes continue to show off their talent, the tour of the council’s Paralympic Lantern across the East Riding continues. East Riding of Yorkshire Council launched the tour of the Paralympic Lantern at a community event in Stamford Bridge on 4 September. The next stop on the tour will be the Harvest Food Festival at the Driffield Showground on Saturday, 8 September. From 9.30am-2pm, the Paralympic Lantern will be on display, giving local residents and visitors to the area a chance to see this poignant symbol of the Paralympic values of courage, determination, inspiration and equality. The concept for the Paralympic Games emerged during the Second World War. In 1944, a doctor, Sir Ludwig Guttmann, was working with war veterans with spinal injuries when he started to think about using sport to help them. He was convinced that making them more active would help re-motivate them after serious injury. At the same time as the London Olympic Games in 1948, Dr Guttmann organised the first wheelchair Games at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire. GOOLE : Places still available for summer activities

There are still some places left on the fun session at Wold Newton Primary School on Thursday, 16 August and Goole High School on Friday, 17 August. Children and young people will have the chance to try balloon modelling, face painting, tattoos, circus skills and team games such as football, dodgeball and cricket. Sessions are held from 10.30am-12.30pm and from 1-3pm for five to 14-year-olds. Each session costs £1.50 and children are welcome to stay all day but are reminded to bring a packed lunch. HULL : Get active at Sky Ride Hull

We’re having a fantastic summer of sport and following the country’s cycling success, it’s never been a better time to get back on your bike. Hull is gearing up for its biggest social cycling event of the year, Sky Ride Hull, which will be here in just over two weeks time (Sunday 19 August). The free mass participation bike ride last year welcomed 5,500 riders of all ages and abilities and organisers are hoping this year we will welcome even more riders. Sky Ride Hull will take riders on a 6.1km traffic free route around Hull but the event isn’t just about cycling there will lots of fun activities to do on the way at the Activation Points. GOOLE : Safeguarding Children Event

Children, young people, parents, carers and grandparents are invited to an event in Goole designed to raise awareness of safety issues. The event, Tuesday Fun Day, is to be held at Marshlands Children Centre, Hall Road, Goole on Tuesday, 21 August between 12noon and 3pm. Local services, including East Riding of Yorkshire Council, East Riding Safeguarding Children Board, East Riding Safeguarding Adults Board, Humberside Police, ERVAS and Humberside Fire and Rescue will all be available for advice ranging from benefit advice, fire safety, road safety, carers support and family support. The young people’s safeguarding group will be running a competition for young people to design an e-safety poster, there will be craft activities, face painting as well as bingo and cake stalls. To kick-start the summer holidays, Sewerby Hall and Gardens is hosting a wide variety of children’s events throughout July and August. Wednesday, 25 July sees East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Sports Development Team host their Bush Craft event. Starting from 1pm, children can follow in the footsteps of people like Ray Mears and Bear Grylls. Participants will find out which plants and animals can be used to help us live and survive. Thursday, 26 July sees the return of Rusticus Wacky Walks. It previously featured earlier in the year and immensely well-received, the Rusticus team brought their very own take on summer games and sporting good fun. Wacky Walks takes you on a marathon of mayhem tracking the story of the ancient and modern Olympic Games. There are still some places left on the play session at Leven primary school on Tuesday, 31 July, Kilham Primary School on Thursday, 2 August and North Ferriby Primary School on Friday, 3 August. Children and young people will have the chance to try junk modelling, face painting, circus skills and team games such as football, dodgeball and cricket. Sessions are for children aged five to 14 years old from 10.30am-12.30pm and from 1-3pm. Each session costs £1.50 and children are welcome to stay all day but are reminded to bring a packed lunch.
