East Riding Local Plan

The Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP, Secretary of State for Transport, is today visiting the East Riding to mark the completion of highway works on the A164 and speak to users of the council’s Wheels to Work Scheme, in Goole, which was funded by the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF). The £10 million A164 Humber Bridge to Beverley Route Improvement Scheme, to which the council contributed £2.3 million, began in spring 2012 and was designed to reduce congestion, particularly at peak intervals, and improve traffic flows for up to 35,000 vehicles using the road each day. As well as the installation of a section of dual carriageway, between Willerby and Castle Hill, the council’s contractor, Jackson Civil Engineering, also reconfigured four roundabouts and constructed lengths of new footpath/cycleway. To commemorate the occasion, Mr McLoughlin, Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and Adam Tuke, contracts director for Jackson Civil Engineering, will be planting a tree at the site. In the afternoon, the Transport Secretary will be visiting Goole to view one of the schemes being funded by the £1.8 million the council successfully secured from the LSTF for the ‘Get Moving Goole’…

Able UK’s Marine Energy Park : Offshore Wind Connections

Potential supply chain opportunities at Able UK’s Marine Energy Park (AMEP) and the fallout from the introduction of the Energy Bill are on the agenda at a free breakfast briefing this week. The Team Humber Marine Alliance (THMA) hosted ‘Offshore Wind Connections’, which is being supported by EEF the manufacturers’ organisation, will feature David Shepherd, Able UK’s group business executive. There are a limited number of delegate spaces available at the briefing this Wednesday, April 24, at Forest Pines, Brigg, which will also includes senior industry figures from David Brown Wind Energy, Strabag Offshore and the Department for Energy & Climate Change (DECC). Mr Shepherd will detail the proposed 320ha Able UK’s Marine Energy Park development on the south bank of the Humber, just north of Immingham, the anticipated economic growth it will create for the Humber region and outline how local companies can be involved. “The offshore wind industry is tonnage light and land hungry – something most ports don’t know how to deal with or don’t want to,” said Mr Shepherd. ”AMEP provides a unique UK solution meaning the Humber is now poised to take advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity.” The project is at a critical…

East Riding Local Plan

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is pleased to announce the appointment of local construction company, Hobson & Porter, as the main contractor for the £6million Haltemprice Centre project, with the works scheduled to start at the end of April. The scheme, which forms part of the council’s capital investment programme, was granted planning permission in December last year and will improve access to service provision by bringing a number of local services under one roof, including Anlaby’s library and customer service centre, resulting in reduced running costs as well as addressing a number of maintenance requirements and improving the venue’s energy efficiency. Initial works will focus on the new extension to the rear of the building, which will become the main entrance, and refurbishment of outdoor pitches and creation of additional parking spaces. Work will be phased to minimise disruption, and will take approximately 20 months to complete, with the final element of the works completed in autumn 2014. Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The creation of the Haltemprice Centre to provide a host of services under one roof demonstrates the commitment of this council in continuing to provide high-quality services for our…

Economic Development Strategy Launched

Economic Development Strategy Launched

A strategy has been launched to promote sustainable economic development over the next four years in the East Riding. The East Riding of Yorkshire Economic Development Strategy was launched by the East Riding of Yorkshire Local Strategic Partnership’s Economy and Skills Action Group at Brough Business Centre. The strategy sets out a long-term vision, strategic framework and an overview of the activities the Local Strategic Partnership will seek to promote between 2012 and 2016. The impact of the global financial crisis during 2007-2008 had wide ranging implications for the East Riding’s economy. Many businesses have seen trading conditions become more difficult, with demand falling and access to funding becoming more constrained. Delivery of economic development activity has also changed with a greater focus on local priority setting through Local Enterprise Partnerships, a removal of regional structures and competitive funding replacing programmed public sector funds. This strategy is sensitive to the current difficult market conditions and advocates activity to build the economic resilience of the East Riding and its businesses and workforce. Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic development, tourism and rural issues at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “In spite of the uncertain economic climate, there are…

Local Businesses Need To Claim Larger Share Of Training Support

March 5, 2013

Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, is calling on East Yorkshire businesses to do more to access government support for staff training. He said, “This area has huge opportunities to develop its economy and compete globally. Doing that requires the development of the highest possible skills in the workforce if we are to grow the number of high paying jobs and start to be a net contributor to the national economy. The Coalition Government is reducing regulatory burdens, cutting corporation tax and promoting job creation. A million more private sector jobs have been created in the last two years and unemployment is lower than in Europe or the USA. “We’re not doing enough though, in Yorkshire. Local businesses need to take advantage of government support for staff training such as the Employee Ownership Pilot.” An additional £150 million has been put into the second round of the Employee Ownership Pilot (EOP), a scheme designed to get funding directly to employers so that they can deliver more flexible training packages better focused on their own skills’ requirements. Total investment in the EOP has now reached £240 million. This pilot has already seen £5.1 million committed to projects across Yorkshire and…

More than 120 local businesses and representatives attended the second in a series of four events organised by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the Federation of Small Businesses to help support and boost the local economy. The event at Bishop Burton College covered social media and apprenticeships, with Chris Middleton, principal director of marketing agency, Eskimosoup, providing a straight-talking presentation on social media and how businesses can take advantage of it, while avoiding the pitfalls, and East Riding company, Grays & Co Estate Agency highlighted the benefits of employing an apprentice. As well as presentations, the event provided local training providers with the opportunity to talk about the apprenticeship training programmes they offer and half a dozen young people on the council’s Fast forward to Apprenticeship scheme also had the chance to pitch themselves as prospective employees to local businesses. Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic development, tourism and rural issues at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The event was well-attended and a huge success in terms of providing businesses with practical advice and help on how they can take advantage of new technologies and benefit from employing an apprentice. “The council works closely with the…

Graham Stuart Welcomes New Traineeship Programme

January 28, 2013
By
Graham Stuart

Local MP Graham Stuart has welcomed plans to set up a new traineeship programme to help give young people the confidence, skills and experience to compete with more experienced adults. The new programme was announced by Skills Minister Matthew Hancock just before he visited Beverley and Holderness at Graham Stuart’s invitation earlier this month to discuss what is being done locally to help prepare youngpeople for success in today’s increasingly competitive labour market. Following the announcement Graham Stuart said, “This is great news for young people trying to get a foot on the work ladder. The Government is doing more than ever to make sure our young people have the skills they need to compete and succeed in the workplace. A record half a million people started apprenticeships last year, with 3,790 in Beverley and Holderness. This new traineeship programme will help even more young people.” Matthew Hancock, Minister for Skills, added, “We want to support everyone in our country to reach their personal best. To do that, we are introducing traineeships to help young people with the skills they need to get, and hold down a job. “That’s vital for our economy to compete in the global race. It’s also a question of fairness. Traineeships will give young people the helping hand and experience they need to compete…
