The Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP, Secretary of State for Transport, is today visiting the East Riding to mark the completion of highway works on the A164 and speak to users of the council’s Wheels to Work Scheme, in Goole, which was funded by the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF). The £10 million A164 Humber Bridge to Beverley Route Improvement Scheme, to which the council contributed £2.3 million, began in spring 2012 and was designed to reduce congestion, particularly at peak intervals, and improve traffic flows for up to 35,000 vehicles using the road each day. As well as the installation of a section of dual carriageway, between Willerby and Castle Hill, the council’s contractor, Jackson Civil Engineering, also reconfigured four roundabouts and constructed lengths of new footpath/cycleway. To commemorate the occasion, Mr McLoughlin, Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and Adam Tuke, contracts director for Jackson Civil Engineering, will be planting a tree at the site. East Riding Local Plan

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is launching an awareness campaign this week which aims to highlight the risks of New Psychoactive Substances (also known as Legal Highs). The campaign aims to highlight the risks of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) and recreational substance misuse. NPS are substances used like illegal drugs, but not covered by current misuse of drugs laws, and so are legal to possess or to use. Although these drugs are marketed as legal substances, it doesn’t mean they are safe or approved for people to use. It just means that they’ve not been declared illegal to use and possess. They are still normally considered illegal to sell under medicines legislation. NPS can carry serious health risks. The chemicals they contain have, in most cases, never been used in drugs for human consumption before, so haven’t been tested to show that they are safe. Users can never be certain what they are taking and what the effects might be. Some drugs marketed as legal highs actually contain some ingredients that are illegal to possess. NPS are usually sold on internet sites as plant food, bath salts or herbal remedies. They may be labelled ‘not for human consumption’. Used alongside…

Making People Safer On The Region’s Roads

May 8, 2013
By

Throughout May the Think B 4 U Drink partnership is focusing on helping people to stay safe on the roads in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The campaign is run by a range of agencies within the Humber region including Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Humberside Police, NHS, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and Safer Roads Humber. The overall aim is to reduce the effects of alcohol on individuals, their families and friends, and the local community. During the month the partnership will focus on different groups of drivers, starting with young people during National Road Safety Week (6-12 May), and the effect alcohol can have on their safety and their ability to drive. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, one of the partners, will be running a comprehensive programme of events throughout the week. The Service’s road safety team will also be utilising the ‘Distraction to Destruction’ literature during each event. On the evening of Wednesday 8 May the Service will be supporting the Hull College Car Night, utilising both the interactive iCar crash simulator and our sponsored Bikesafe motorcycle. On Thursday 9 and Friday 10 May the ‘drive4life’ presentation will be delivered to motor vehicle students at Hull College’s…
