At the awards ceremony on Tuesday 18 September Hull City Council’s East Park was awarded Gold in the Country Houses, Estates, Parks and Gardens category. The judges noted that the park was particularly impressive with many attractions and facilities for all ages interests and abilities. Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, said: “This is a great achievement for the park and its visitors and will add to the Green Flag status we achieved earlier in the year. “All of the city’s parks and gardens are well worth a visit and have many attractions and facilities for everyone to benefit from and enjoy.” More of our city’s gardens were also recognised yesterday, winning five awards at the Yorkshire in Bloom Awards. Green spaces were judged through the spring and summer months and Hull was awarded a Silver award in the ‘City’ category. Veterans Weekend takes place in Hull’s East Park this Saturday and Sunday, between 10am and 5pm. The family weekend will be a fantastic experience for people of all ages, recognising and celebrating the role of our armed forces both past and present. People will have the chance to meet veterans and experience what it was like in the 1940′s as well as meet current servicemen and women from the armed forces. Seven regiments will be attending and there will be a variety of military vehicles and memorabilia, living history displays such as a German field hospital, traditional fairground attractions, a young peoples’ rugby tournament and a range of other activities. The main stage will showcase 1940′s music, dance and fashion. Highlights will include a performance from the Red Devils – The Parachute Regiment Freefall Team between 3 and 3.30pm on Sunday and WWI and WWII battleground re-enactments taking place on both days. New to this year’s Veteran’s event is a tank pull. The 150 transport regiment will be pulling a tank 80 meters on the Saturday. The East Yorkshire Thoroughbred Car Club’s 44th East Coast Car Run will be fuelling the afternoon with an array of entertaining vehicles on Sunday, 10 June on display from 12noon onwards at Sewerby Fields, Sewerby. The run, of approximately 30 miles, will start from East Park, Holderness Road, Hull and vehicles will congregate from 9.30-11am. Any vehicle not wishing to be part of the run can proceed directly to Sewerby Fields, near to Sewerby Hall and Gardens. Last year this very popular event attracted well over 500 visitors and will include buses, commercial vehicles, military and emergency vehicles, historic and classic cars, motorcycles, stationary engines and tractors. The run route will take the vehicles on the A165 to the East Yorkshire coastal resort of Sewerby arriving from approximately 12noon onwards. The area will also include an auto-jumble and a selection of food and drink outlets. Public entry to this event is free and event souvenir programmes, describing the vehicles being exhibited, will be available.
