Legal Highs : Campaign Highlights The Risk

East Yorkshire Council

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is launching an awareness campaign this week which aims to highlight the risks of New Psychoactive Substances (also known as Legal Highs). The campaign aims to highlight the risks of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) and recreational substance misuse. NPS are substances used like illegal drugs, but not covered by current misuse of drugs laws, and so are legal to possess or to use. Although these drugs are marketed as legal substances, it doesn’t mean they are safe or approved for people to use. It just means that they’ve not been declared illegal to use and possess. They are still normally considered illegal to sell under medicines legislation. NPS can carry serious health risks. The chemicals they contain have, in most cases, never been used in drugs for human consumption before, so haven’t been tested to show that they are safe. Users can never be certain what they are taking and what the effects might be. Some drugs marketed as legal highs actually contain some ingredients that are illegal to possess. NPS are usually sold on internet sites as plant food, bath salts or herbal remedies. They may be labelled ‘not for human consumption’. Used alongside…

Police Crack Down On Drugs Over Festive Period

December 25, 2012

Humberside Police

The party season is now in full swing, and whilst most people enjoy themselves by over indulging in the festive spirit by perhaps consuming excess food and drink, the temptation to try drugs or dabble in them can be too much for some to overcome. Humberside Police, Hull City Council and NHS Hull are working together to make people aware of the dangers and symptoms of drugs, particularly mephedrone, also known as MCAT. The partner agencies will also provide up-to-date information on how and where to access support agencies and networks which are available for everyone, from first time users, recreational users, addicts or concerned family and friends. Police Officers and Staff in Hull held a week of action in October, 2012, which supported on-going work being carried out in schools, colleges and in the wider community, which targets criminals, but educates people on how mephedrone and other substances can have a detrimental effect on not just the user’s lives, but also the loved ones around them. Parents of school children in secondary schools across the city received a letter from Ch Insp Dave Houchin, which gave information on what the drug is, how it is taken, signs and symptoms,…

East Yorkshire : Don’t Get Sharked This Christmas

East Yorkshire Council

The England Illegal Money Lending Team, in partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, is cracking down this Christmas on loan sharks who cause nothing but misery in communities. Through enforcement action, awareness raising and education, they aim to put an end to this callous crime and encourage the public to celebrate the season without turning to an illegal money lender. The message is clear, what may seem like a small loan to tide people over for Christmas, could end up costing them well into the New Year and beyond. The effect is not just financial; the impact on the lives of victims and their families can be horrific. To highlight the impact, the England Illegal Money Lending Team has released a video compilation of real-life victim’s stories, in which those who have suffered at the hands of loan sharks explain in their own words how horrendous their experiences were. Watch the video on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EIyIMHdOtc&feature=plcp The council has been running a six-month roadshow at its customer service centres and local Citizen Advice Bureaus warning the public about loan sharks. To raise awareness, the council has been displaying posters and literature providing advice and guidance, which have proven successful.…

FIVE Drunk Drivers Caught in One Night – East Riding

November 19, 2012
By

Humberside Police are reminding drivers to ‘Think B4 U Drink’ and drive, following five people being locked up on Saturday night for driving whilst drunk. On the eve of the new regional campaign ‘Think B4 U Drink’, run by a range of agencies including; Humberside Police, NHS, Humberside Fire and Rescue and Safer Roads Humber, five people will have been detained in police custody over the weekend to appear in front of a court for drink driving. Year after year police encounter numerous people who think it is acceptable to have a few drinks and get behind the wheel of a vehicle to drive, but what they are not considering is that it is not just their lives they put at risk, but also those innocent people who are also using the roads. It takes much longer than people think for alcohol to pass through your body, therefore throughout the year officers carry out stop checks, at all times of the day and night to encourage drivers to think twice before getting behind the wheel, after a night on the alcohol. East Riding Roads Policing Inspector Mark HUGHES said: “Driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs can significantly impair…
