HULL : Local MP continues his campaign against incinerators

August 17, 2012
By
Graham Stuart

Graham Stuart MP has written to both the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Hull City Council to advise caution against any future consideration of waste incineration. The Beverley and Holderness MP said, “A number of years ago I founded ‘Hull and Holderness Opposing the Incinerator’ (HOTI) which fought a successful campaign to stop plans for an incinerator at Saltend. I was really pleased that campaign was a success and the idea was scrapped.” Graham continued, “The East Riding and Hull have made great progress in hitting recycling targets over recent years but I am concerned that their recent Joint Waste Plan Review has not discounted using incineration again in future – it’s inefficient, bad for the environment, and could cost the Councils money if they miss their recycling targets. I have written to both councils urging them to rule out incineration in the future.” In addition to his communication with the councils, Graham has also co-sponsored an Early Day Motion calling on the Government to act to ban the incineration of recyclable or compostable waste. EAST RIDING : Region Continues To Recycle More Waste

July 19, 2012
By

East Riding’s households recycled 60 per cent of their waste last month (June). The recycling rate in the six trial areas was 70 per cent, with a big drop of 22 per cent in the waste being put in the green landfill bins. Councillor Symon Fraser, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said: “Our residents are up there, among the best in the country when it comes to recycling. “Month by month, since the beginning of this year, the recycling rate has steadily gone up and the amount of waste sent to landfill has been going down.” That 60 per cent recycling rate is based on the collections from the blue recycling bins, the brown bins for composting and the waste taken to the 10 household waste recycling sites. 1,872 tonnes of recyclables, ie glass, paper, plastics, cans and Tetra Pak, was collected from the blue bins last month compared with 1,292 tonnes in June last year, a jump of 45 per cent in just one year. 5,260 tonnes of garden waste, food waste and cardboard was collected from the brown bins, compared with 4,437 tonnes in June last year, an increase of 19…

Local MP Says That Incinerators Are Rubbish

July 16, 2012
By
Graham Stuart

Graham Stuart MP has co-sponsored an Early Day Motion calling on the Government to act on a resolution which commits to banning the incineration of recyclable or compostable waste. The Beverley and Holderness MP founded ‘Hull and Holderness Opposing the Incinerator’ (HOTI) in 2006, which fought a successful campaign to stop plans for an incinerator at Saltend. As evidence from Europe has now shown, using them to dispose of rubbish can have a serious effect on recycling rates. Graham said, “Communities like ours all over the country have been opposing expensive, environmentally damaging plans to build incinerators. Figures from Europe reinforce that they are not the answer, as over using them can have a dramatic effect on how much we recycle. “In the East Riding we now recycle 56% of waste, which is fantastic, but we will have to work even harder to reach the 62% target by 2015.” Use Facebook to Comment on this Post

By

The towns and areas that will receive free compost in this summer’s give aways by East Riding of Yorkshire Council have just been announced. A total of 5,000 bags ready to be taken away will be given free at nine giveaways across the East Riding. Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said: “The giveaways have become a popular annual event and little wonder because this compost makes a great soil improver. “Much of it will have come from the brown bins. Only a few months ago it was the plate scrapings from dinner, the mowings from the lawn, the clippings from the hedge and cardboard from online packages.” All the giveaways start at 4pm and will go on until all the bags have gone. Bridlington: Hilderthorpe coach park, Hilderthorpe Road, 9 May. Beverley: Race Course, 10 May. Market Weighton: Market car park, 15 May. Withernsea: Market, Pavilion car park, 16 May. Hornsea: Broadway car park, 17 May. Driffield: The Show Ground, 22 May. Goole: West Park, Airmyn Road, 23 May. Pocklington: Sports and social club, The Balk, 24 May. Amount Of Waste Being Sent To Landfill In ER Drops

March 21, 2012
By

Residents across the East Riding sent less of their waste to landfill in February by reducing what they put in their green bins. Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for the environment, housing and planning at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said; “What a brilliant result. “In these straightened times, it makes absolutely no sense to be paying tax to the government on every tonne we send to landfill. It is like burying good money in the ground. “Our residents are doing a great job of checking their waste to make sure that what can be recycled goes in their blue bin and what can be composted goes in their brown bin.” The recycling rate for February was 54 per cent, 11 per cent higher than in February last year. To some extent this is due to the additional collections of glass, further plastics and Tetra Pak in the blue bins and food waste in the brown bins. There was a 73 per cent rise last month in the food waste, garden waste and cardboard collected from the brown composting bins, much of which would previously have gone to landfill. There was a 59 per cent rise last month in the…
