Able UK’s Marine Energy Park : Offshore Wind Connections

Potential supply chain opportunities at Able UK’s Marine Energy Park (AMEP) and the fallout from the introduction of the Energy Bill are on the agenda at a free breakfast briefing this week. The Team Humber Marine Alliance (THMA) hosted ‘Offshore Wind Connections’, which is being supported by EEF the manufacturers’ organisation, will feature David Shepherd, Able UK’s group business executive. There are a limited number of delegate spaces available at the briefing this Wednesday, April 24, at Forest Pines, Brigg, which will also includes senior industry figures from David Brown Wind Energy, Strabag Offshore and the Department for Energy & Climate Change (DECC). Mr Shepherd will detail the proposed 320ha Able UK’s Marine Energy Park development on the south bank of the Humber, just north of Immingham, the anticipated economic growth it will create for the Humber region and outline how local companies can be involved. “The offshore wind industry is tonnage light and land hungry – something most ports don’t know how to deal with or don’t want to,” said Mr Shepherd. ”AMEP provides a unique UK solution meaning the Humber is now poised to take advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity.” The project is at a critical…

Economic Development Strategy Launched

A strategy has been launched to promote sustainable economic development over the next four years in the East Riding. The East Riding of Yorkshire Economic Development Strategy was launched by the East Riding of Yorkshire Local Strategic Partnership’s Economy and Skills Action Group at Brough Business Centre. The strategy sets out a long-term vision, strategic framework and an overview of the activities the Local Strategic Partnership will seek to promote between 2012 and 2016. The impact of the global financial crisis during 2007-2008 had wide ranging implications for the East Riding’s economy. Many businesses have seen trading conditions become more difficult, with demand falling and access to funding becoming more constrained. Delivery of economic development activity has also changed with a greater focus on local priority setting through Local Enterprise Partnerships, a removal of regional structures and competitive funding replacing programmed public sector funds. This strategy is sensitive to the current difficult market conditions and advocates activity to build the economic resilience of the East Riding and its businesses and workforce. Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic development, tourism and rural issues at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “In spite of the uncertain economic climate, there are…

More than 120 local businesses and representatives attended the second in a series of four events organised by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the Federation of Small Businesses to help support and boost the local economy. The event at Bishop Burton College covered social media and apprenticeships, with Chris Middleton, principal director of marketing agency, Eskimosoup, providing a straight-talking presentation on social media and how businesses can take advantage of it, while avoiding the pitfalls, and East Riding company, Grays & Co Estate Agency highlighted the benefits of employing an apprentice. As well as presentations, the event provided local training providers with the opportunity to talk about the apprenticeship training programmes they offer and half a dozen young people on the council’s Fast forward to Apprenticeship scheme also had the chance to pitch themselves as prospective employees to local businesses. Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic development, tourism and rural issues at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The event was well-attended and a huge success in terms of providing businesses with practical advice and help on how they can take advantage of new technologies and benefit from employing an apprentice. “The council works closely with the…

East Riding of Yorkshire : Fast Forward to Apprenticeship Programme

January 16, 2013

East Riding Local Plan

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Employment and Skills Team has launched its Fast Forward to Apprenticeship Programme to boost people’s chances of finding work in the area. The programme, funded by Jobcentre Plus flexible support, will support unemployed people aged 16 and over who want to become an apprentice, and ultimately get a job. The team will work closely with its own apprenticeship training provider, East Riding Training Services, as well as other local colleges and providers to train and support local unemployed people to apply for apprentice opportunities. The programme will be run in Goole, Beverley and Bridlington. The idea of the programme is that it matches the employability skills gap between an apprenticeship provider and employer. Sara Arnold, employment and skills manager, said: “Often people fail when applying for an apprenticeship vacancy because they haven’t known where to look for apprenticeships on offer, are unsure what is out there and don’t understand how an employer expects them to perform at interview. Fast Forward to Apprenticeship aims to address this problem by working closely with suitable, motivated candidates.” Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic development, tourism and rural issues at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The current economic climate is challenging both the…

Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust Help The Homeless!

Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust

Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust are working in partnership with local charities and organisations to create a temporary homeless shelter in Hull to provide overnight shelter during the coldest nights of the year. The shelter, located at Sanctuary House, 213 Anlaby Road is to go live from Thursday 20th December 2012 until 28th February 2013, 8pm to 8am. Pauline Lewin, Director of Infrastructure and Development who is the Trust lead on Corporate Social Responsibility says “The provision of an emergency ‘night shelter’ in Hull falls short of demand at the moment and it is regrettable that there are homeless people in the city who cannot be accommodated”. With this in mind Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust have launched a homeless shelter in partnership with local charities and organisations. Such organisations include Sanctuary Housing and Groundwork. It is supported by Kingston upon Hull Council and other charities. The aim of the shelter is to create a stopgap for homeless people over the winter, and may reduce hospital emergency admissions from this group. Staff in the Trust have volunteered to provide routine health checks in their own time. The main homeless shelter in Hull at the moment is…

East Yorkshire : Don’t Get Sharked This Christmas

December 3, 2012
By
East Riding Local Plan

The England Illegal Money Lending Team, in partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, is cracking down this Christmas on loan sharks who cause nothing but misery in communities. Through enforcement action, awareness raising and education, they aim to put an end to this callous crime and encourage the public to celebrate the season without turning to an illegal money lender. The message is clear, what may seem like a small loan to tide people over for Christmas, could end up costing them well into the New Year and beyond. The effect is not just financial; the impact on the lives of victims and their families can be horrific. To highlight the impact, the England Illegal Money Lending Team has released a video compilation of real-life victim’s stories, in which those who have suffered at the hands of loan sharks explain in their own words how horrendous their experiences were. Watch the video on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EIyIMHdOtc&feature=plcp The council has been running a six-month roadshow at its customer service centres and local Citizen Advice Bureaus warning the public about loan sharks. To raise awareness, the council has been displaying posters and literature providing advice and guidance, which have proven successful.…

Get Ready for the Green Deal says MP

November 14, 2012
By
Graham-Stuart

Graham Stuart, the MP for Beverley and Holderness is encouraging homeowners to get ready for the ‘Green Deal’, a flagship government initiative to increase the energy efficiency of properties. Graham said, “If you are considering updating your heating system or improving your home insulation then take a look to see if you can benefit from The Green Deal. The scheme opens for applications at the end of January and a cash back incentive for front-runner applications has just been announced. You can get the ball rolling now by calling the Green Deal advice line on 0300 123 1234. “The Green Deal is available to everybody and has been designed with no upfront costs; instead the work is paid for by a loan that will be paid back via savings on your energy bills. The golden rule is that the predicted savings from the energy efficiency improvements must equal or exceed the cost of installation. “Fuel poverty affects almost a quarter of residents who live in rural ‘off grid gas’ areas and I am determined to ensure that we seize every opportunity to improve our energy efficiency, reduce our carbon footprint and save money.” Further details about the scheme can be…
