A new series of art works will be on show in shop windows around the city centre. Trade Lines is an exciting exploration into retail, shopping and commerce. It will reflect the world we are connected to and our trade links, historical and present, in all its forms. Showcasing artists Anna Bean, Hannah Rogerson, Olivia Young, Claire West, Ann Whitaker and Rebecca Dennison, Trade Lines will brighten city centre shops for 12 weeks and will emphasise all that is great about Hull. New works can be found in shop windows in Hepworth’s Arcade, Trinity Square and King Edward Street as six locally based women artists present their own responses to the idea of trade and commerce in the High Street. This forms part of wider initiatives by Hull City Council and its partners to improve and develop the city centre and in particular to attract more people into the Old Town, with the arts and culture are a key part of this process. Trade Lines follows on from hugely popular Hull City Council Whitefriargate Art Initiative, which saw four major artists projects hang banners, install works in shop windows and even decorate a tree in Whitefriargate to add creative flair…

Organised by the East Riding Cultural Partnership, the Capturing the East Riding: Photographs from the Community exhibition is travelling to Pocklington Arts Centre as part of its tour of the East Riding. After successful runs at Beverley Art Gallery and Sewerby Hall and Gardens, the 100 artworks that comprise Capturing the East Riding: Photographs from the Community will go on display at the centre from Tuesday, 7 August to Saturday, 15 September. Pocklington is an excellent destination for the exhibition given how much local interest there was in the competition. Community groups, including Pocklington Camera Club, the U3A and Pocklington Arts Society, as well as the town council, participated in the contest and helped organisers to get residents involved. Stewart’s Burnby Hall Museum and Gardens, through the biennial Major Stewart Arts Awards, were also instrumental in encouraging local schoolchildren, including a class from Barmby Moor Primary School, to enter their best photos. Hilary Saynor, chair of the East Riding Cultural Partnership and chair of Pocklington Arts Society, said: “During the competition, we were delighted with the response from the Pocklington area. Local groups seemed to relish the opportunity to get involved in this new arts initiative, and we thank them…
