Police Warning After A Number Of Thefts From Cars

February 24, 2012
By

Since the start of January police have seen a large number of reports of theft from motor vehicles, whilst the owner has been inside a sports club. Opportunist thieves have broken into secure vehicle and stolen items, which include sat navs, mobile phones, wallets and laptop computers. Police are reminding people not to leave any items of value in your car, not matter how long you may be away from your vehicle, as a thief will take a matter of minutes to steal your items of value. A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: “Many people who visit the gym and travel to fitness centres do so on the way home from work, therefore they may have such things as laptops, sat navs and mobile phones in their possession. “Police would advise people, if they do have such things, to take them into the sports centre and use the locker facilities, if they are available, or to ask the staff if they have somewhere secure to put the items. “Always park your vehicle in a well lit location and not in a dark place, as this could make it an easy target. “An opportunist thief will take any chance they have…

East Yorkshire Students Are Fashion Forward

January 31, 2012
By

Hundreds of students across the East Riding are showing how they can create the latest fashions out of junk clothing. The students are from Bishop Burton College, East Riding College and Longcroft School, Beverley. They will be displaying their creations at an awards ceremony on Monday, 13 February in The Spa Bridlington, in two categories 16+ years and 14-15 years. The competition is organised by East Riding of Yorkshire Council to highlight the waste of textiles. A mountain of clothing weighing up to 4,000 tonnes, equivalent in weight to more than 3,500 Mini Coopers or nearly four million pairs of jeans, are thrown away across the East Riding every year. Much of this clothing could have been repaired or re-fashioned. This is the first year that a school is taking part. Those in the 14-15 years category will make an outfit from a discarded pair of jeans and T-shirts. The older students are free to choose any pre-worn clothing or textiles and to be as adventurous as they choose. Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning, said: “The amount of clothing thrown away every year is a tragedy. Most of could be sent to charity shops and…
