East Riding Local Plan

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has secured funding from the Government to allow for the refurbishment of the existing traveller site at Woodhill Way, in Cottingham. Works will include the replacement of all utility blocks on the site and improvements to the existing waste water system. The refurbishment of the site will also allow for one additional pitch to be provided, helping to meet an identified need in the area. All works will be contained within the existing site. A temporary site will be created near to the Skidby roundabout to allow for the refurbishment works to be undertaken. This site was previously used as a compound for the recent A164 Humber Bridge to Beverley Route Improvement Scheme. Upon completion of the refurbishment of Woodhill Way, the temporary site will be reinstated to its previous open nature. A planning application for this proposal, including the temporary site at Skidby roundabout, is due to be submitted in the middle of June. Subject to approval, it is intended that a formal start on site will be made in November, with completion of works due in December 2014. The council has arranged a public drop-in session to provide more information on this proposal.…

Safer Roads Humber : More Than Just A Rider...Someone's Son

Drivers across the Humber region are being urged to look out for motorcyclists as the latest phase of Safer Roads Humber’s Someone’s Son road safety campaign gets underway. The award-winning Someone’s Son campaign has been running since 2010 and is aimed mainly at motorists to look out for those on two wheels. A new burst of radio adverts encourages motorists to drive considerately towards motorcyclists and to take extra care around junctions and roundabouts. Whilst adverts on the back of buses remind drivers to give not just motorbikes but also pedal cyclist’s room on the road. Motorcyclists make up only one per cent of traffic yet are involved in 21 per cent of injury crashes. The majority of crashes occur in urban areas, often in 30mph zones, around junctions and usually involve a bike and a car. The vast majority of rider casualties are male, who will be, by definition, someone’s son, husband or dad. Ruth Gore, spokesperson for Safer Roads Humber, said: “There’s a clear issue around drivers seeing riders in traffic and we hope this campaign will encourage drivers to look out for bikes and reduce the number of crashes. “We recognise it’s not just about the driver…

MP Keeps The Pressure On Ambulance Performance

Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart continues to put pressure on the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to improve the emergency ambulance response times in Holderness. Following concerns raised about the deployment of ambulance crews to other areas Mr Stuart submitted a second Freedom of Information request for clarification of the situation. Graham said, “The information shows that vehicles are being despatched out of area on a regular basis, but equally, crews are being sent from other areas to cover East Riding. “One of the greatest problems is that crews are being delayed handing patients over at hospital. This unacceptable delay forces the ambulance service to spread their resources thinly whilst crews are held up. “Since the introduction of the new GPs contracts by the Labour Government many doctors’ surgeries have opted out of out of hours care, this has seen a huge rise in the number of people who are attending accident and emergency units across the country. The service is now struggling to cope under the immense pressure. “We have to regain control of the situation and I have written to the Chief Executive of Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust to seek a solution to…

East Riding Local Plan

The council is now underway with a £2 million surface dressing programme that will see around 650,000 square metres of highway resurfaced between now and August. Work began last week on sections of the network in Holderness and this week sees maintenance teams working nights on the A1079 at Arras Hill, near Market Weighton, and the A1035 Tickton Bypass, so as to minimise disruption to motorists and the travelling public. Surface dressing forms part of the council’s proactive approach to the maintenance of the 3,500km of highway network in the East Riding and takes place every year on both urban and rural roads. Surface dressing has four main purposes: to provide texture and skid resistance to an existing surface, to seal a road against water, to stop disintegration and to provide a uniform appearance for a patched road. Councillor Chris Matthews, cabinet portfolio holder for infrastructure, highways and emergency planning at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Ensuring the roads and infrastructure of the East Riding, as a whole, is in the best possible order long term is a top priority for the council. “Surface dressing provides a value for money and proactive approach by sealing roads, reducing reactive repair…

Graham Stuart MP Leads Event To Help Save Lives

As part of a campaign to improve emergency ambulance response times across his constituency, Member of Parliament for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart held a HEART Conference in Withernsea last Saturday. Named ‘Influence, Educate and Have a Go’ the aim of the event was to get members of the public to learn how they can make a difference in an emergency as well as promoting the work of Community First Responder Teams. Graham said, “Saturday’s event was so well received that people are urging me to repeat it in Beverley, Hedon and Hornsea, it was fantastic to see so many children and adults who were genuinely interested in learning how to save a life. Knowing how to save the life of a friend, loved one or even a complete stranger is a skill that you hope you will never need to use but will be very grateful of if you find yourself in an emergency situation. “Since the beginning of my campaign, emergency response times in the constituency have got better but there is still room for improvement; with greater support for our Community First Responder Teams and more teams, particularly in Mid Holderness, we can improve those times further…
