Today, Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, congratulated the community of Beverley for hosting part of the national Olympic torch relay.
Torchbearers Haydn Pitchforth, Karen Inman nee Briggs, Lindsey Chapman, Michael Nicholson and Rebecca Hutchinson were chosen to carry the torch through Beverley on route to its overnight stop in Hull next Monday.
After campaigning successfully for Beverley’s participation in the national relay, Graham is delighted to see residents of the community able to join in the celebrations of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games at a local level.
For many, this provides a once in a lifetime opportunity for residents of the town and the surrounding area to be part of a global event, and show national spirit for the upcoming Games next month.
Graham said, “It’s great that local people get to see the Torch with all its symbolism passing through East Yorkshire. Beverley is the most beautiful market town in England and where better than Beverley for the Olympic ideal to be displayed. Lots of people will be out to celebrate the relay and cheer on the local torchbearers. It will be a proud day for the East Riding of Yorkshire.”
