Young people across the East Riding are being offered the opportunity to volunteer in their community and earn valuable UCAS points during the summer holidays.
Last summer, the National Citizen Scheme (NSC) proved so successful with young people in Bridlington and Beverley that it is being extended this year to include Year 11 students in Haltemprice and south Holderness as well.
The NCS, which is run by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s youth support service and funded by young people’s charity, Catch 22, offers a fun but challenging personal development programme during the summer.
Participants also have the chance to take the ASDAN community volunteering qualification to gain 30 UCAS points.
The scheme involves an introduction period followed by a residential outward bound team building exercise and another in the area where the young people live.
Last year, the groups in Beverley and Bridlington took part in a variety of fund-raising and community activities, including raising money for the RNLI and a community garden project.
Their work was also recognised on a national level with the two groups picking up a national award at a prestigious awards ceremony in London attended by HRH The Princess Royal for the short film they had produced, while Drew Ferris was nominated in the same awards for inspiring individual.
Katherine Stoney, volunteering officer at East Riding of Yorkshire Council youth support service, said: “We had two really successful pilot schemes in Beverley and Bridlington, with the groups winning a national award.
“We are really pleased to be able to extend the opportunity to the Haltemprice and Holderness areas this year.
“Last year we were one of the few providers to offer the chance for participants to gain 30 valuable UCAS points, providing the young people complete the ASDAN community volunteering qualification and we will be offering the same this year.
“This really is a great opportunity for young people to make a difference to their community during their summer holidays.”
