Beverley Town FC picked up their first win of their Humber Premier League season by beating Hornsea Town at 2 – 1 at the Norwood Recreation Ground.
The game saw former Beverley player John Kershaw who signed for Hornsea during the summer returning to the club he had spent seven years playing for.
Hornsea came closest to taking the lead in a sluggish first half when a shot from Dean Jennings beat Beverley’s Mike Morris only to hit the cross bar.
With just seconds remaining in the first half the very vocal Hornsea keeper, Richard Dexter, came rushing out handling the ball outside the area.
In his defence Dexter clearly had lost track of his positioning though he left match referee Simon Porter no choice but to show him red card.
It was left John Kershaw to take over the keeping duties from Dexter.
In the second half Beverley began to make their numerical advantage count and slowly began to create more chances.
Beverley got the break when after a scramble the ball fell kindly to skipper Jonny Ricardo who struck a shot that crashed off foot of the post, rolled along the line before going in of the right hand post.
Ricardo with his arms outstretched was clearly delighted not just with scoring but more so with scoring against his former team mate Kershaw taunting him while he celebrated.
Hornsea did not give up and they began to create chances though Beverley managed to break and Mathew Dixon scored a cracking goal from outside the box to extend Town’s lead.
As the game threatened to get away from Hornsea they pulled together as a team and got their reward when Alex Sherwood scored the goal of the hitting a wonder strike that looped over Morris.
Hornsea continued to press and had it not been for a fine diving save from Morris late on they would have left Norwood with a point.
