Work to reduce the risk of flooding from Beverley’s Westwood is well under way.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been working on a two stage scheme in the area. The first stage is now complete and work on the second is due to start later this month.
The scheme is just one of the 188 projects throughout the East Riding to reduce the risk of flooding.
Councillor Stephen Parnaby, OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:
“Following the floods of 2007 this council has been committed to working throughout the East Riding to reduce the risk of flooding to residents and businesses.
“I am sure anyone whose home or livelihood is in the East Riding will welcome this vital work, which help to reduce the impact to the area of flooding if we find ourselves facing a similar situation again in the future.”
A new pipeline has been placed between the area of the Westwood known as the Hurn, and an existing tributary of nearby Sister Beck.
It can carry more than four million litres of water safely away from nearby homes in a twelve hour period, substantially reducing the risk of flooding.
Work is also due to start later this month on a low bund, or embankment, to channel water from the Westwood into the new pipeline.
The council’s land drainage team, in consultation with the Westwood’s Pasture Masters has designed the bund to blend into the edge of the pasture with little visual impact.
