Old Curtains and Bras Win Fashion Awards

East Riding students this morning won awards for their outfits made from discarded net curtains, bras, old shirts and duvets.

They were competing in the pre-worn awards sponsored by to highlight the 3,000 tonnes of clothes sent by residents to landfill last year. This is equivalent to three million pairs of jeans.

The winner, Madeleine Burn, Churchill Avenue, Cottingham, an art and design student at , made a dress and matching bag from two shirts, a pair of trousers and curtain netting.

Runner-up Jessica Neary, Bempton Lane, Flamborough, a student at , used men’s shirts and T-shirts for her design.

And runner-up, Leonie Atkinson of Woodmansea, Beverley, a part-time student at , used 30 old bras, a black T-shirt and a black satin duvet for her winning dress.

Councillor OBE, leader of the council, presented the awards to the winners at the Treasure House, Beverley.

The winning garments and seven other shortlisted designs are now on display at the until 26 February.
