A giant toad was deposited in Beverley last night opposite the Beverley Leisure Centre.
The Tannery Toad , which was designed by students at St Nicholas School in Beverley, is one of many which is popping up right across our region as part of the Larkin With Toads public art project, set to last for 10 weeks.
The one-metre high fibreglass models have been designed and painted by artists and community groups.
Peter Levy will officially launch the Toads Trail at 1pm from the BBC Stage on Victoria Square with the public being challenged to locate all 40 of them!
Former Mayor of Beverley Nev Holgate was stopped in his tracks as he walked down Flemingate and came face to face with the giant toad.

You know if people bothered to actually read the poem toads by Larkin they’d realise what a stupid idea it is to put them everywhere. I’m all for celebrating Larkin’s work but if people actually looked at what the toads represent in the poem, Repression, frustration and self loathing to name a few interpretations they’d realise they couldnt have made a worse choice to celebrate his work.
I disagree with you, Rob. Although Larkin had very mixed feelings about ‘the toad’ work, he found it a very necessary diversion from thoughts of ‘what’s really always there… unresting death’. I think this is made clearer in ‘Toads Revisited’. OK. So what he is saying is still depressing. But I think of the fibreglass toads as respresentative of Larkin when being more light-hearted about his work, and since I don’t buy the traditional view of Larkin as a man who was always depressed – far from it – I find the project in keeping with his spirit.
The toads in Larkin win because he succeeds in making a poem (or two) out of his sense of frustration. The toad trail celebrates this kind of subversive creativity. Hull, Larkin and toads have a bad press sometimes. The toad trail is a way of restoring some balance.
