Hull Recycles Right – Residents To Receive Packs Offering Recycling Tips

Hull residents will receive their new waste and recycling packs over the next few weeks which include hints and tips to help them recycle as much of their waste as possible.

The packs contain information on what can and cannot be recycled and includes:

• a new collection calendar
•  an annual resident’s pass for household waste and recycling centres
• a guide to recycling right
• food waste recycling information
• electrical item disposal information

Councillor Rosie Nicola, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services said:

“Hull is already a top-performing city when it comes to recycling, and from this week onwards, residents will receive a waste pack full of tips to help them recycle even more of their waste. By recycling right using your blue, brown and food bin residents are not only doing their bit for the environment but also helping to save hundreds of thousands of pounds per year as well. This provides a boost to the local economy and supports council services that serve our communities.

“We’ve also extended opening times of our household waste and recycling centres, which are now open seven days a week, helping to make it as easy as possible for residents to recycle.”

The pack includes information to help improve the environmentally friendly composting of food waste from brown bins and caddies. Only Hull City Council approved caddy liners are suitable for the composting process that brown bin waste is used for, as many of the ones sold in supermarkets don’t biodegrade quickly enough.

Free liners for food waste are available to collect in person at customer service centres, libraries or household waste recycling centres. Residents can also request free replacement liners from their collection crew by tying a single liner or the tag from the end of the liner roll to their caddy or brown bin handle on collection day.

Information on the safe disposal of batteries and electrical goods is also included in residents’ waste packs. Batteries and electrical goods can cause fires if placed in wheelie bins, so residents are urged to take these to local household waste and recycling centres.

The annual passes residents will receive allow them to use the household waste and recycling centres located in the city at Burma Drive, Wiltshire Road and Sutton Fields which are now open seven days a week 10am – 5pm.

Residents can also donate unwanted white goods that are in a useable condition to the Reuse shop at Humberfield Recycling Centre or the Re-Use Electrical shop at 254 Marfleet Lane.
