East Riding of Yorkshire Council is developing a £1.2 million scheme to improve the A164 junction with the B1232 at Willerby, also known as The Ketch roundabout.
Queues are often formed on the approaches to the roundabout, particularly on the B1232 from Willerby as motorists wait to turn right onto the A164 towards Beverley. Traffic is forecast to increase in the future with new housing to be built in the area.
To address these issues, the council is designing a scheme to help manage traffic flows and reduce congestion at the junction. The scheme includes the installation of traffic lights on each arm of the roundabout (except Albion Lane), and widening and re-marking of the carriageway to allow more room for traffic to travel through the junction.
The scheme has been developed following in depth discussion with local ward members after concerns were raised by local residents about the existing traffic issues.
The majority of the funding for the scheme comes from developer contributions secured from local housing developments when planning permission was granted.
Work is likely to start on site in early 2022 and will take around six months to complete. The construction process will be managed to minimise disruption to motorists where possible, although the works may cause some delays to journeys.
When complete, it is anticipated that the scheme will improve overall traffic flow through the roundabout by balancing the demand on each arm of the junction. The council will then consider whether a more significant, longer-term option is required to help manage the future predicted increase in traffic volumes along this key route.
Councillor Chris Matthews, the portfolio holder for strategic property and infrastructure, said:
“I am delighted that ward members and officers have worked together to agree on a much-needed improvement scheme for this key junction on our highway network. Motorists will certainly benefit when the works are completed.
“We would like to apologise to any motorists who are caused any delays to their journeys when the work gets underway.”
