New figures released last week show that more than 6,620 police officers have been recruited through a national recruitment drive, backed by £400 million of Government funding.

The announcement means that the Government is ahead of its target to have recruited 6,000 extra officers by next month and 20,000 extra by 2023.

Humberside Police, meanwhile, have an extra 127 officers pounding the streets thanks to the recruitment drive. The new officers bring the total number across the area to 1,929.

Alongside the recruitment campaign, the Government has announced the second round of the Safer Streets Fund, backed by £20 million of new money. This funding will enable Police & Crime Commissioners and local councils to make crime-cutting interventions in residential areas to ensure people feel safe in their communities.

Other steps announced to support frontline police officers include a £636 million funding boost for police forces this year, bringing total police funding to £15.8 billion, boosting police pay by 2.5% – equivalent to a constable receiving an extra £1,100 per year – and enshrining a new ‘police covenant’ into law.

The covenant creates a statutory duty for the Government to do more to support the police, both those currently serving and those who are retired.

Reacting to the news, Graham said:

“I’m over the moon that we have followed through on our election promise to deliver over 6,000 police officers by next month.

“Every one of these 127 extra bobbies on the beat will make an enormous difference in helping to cut crime and keep people safe. I look forward to even more officers joining the ranks over the next few years.”

The Home Secretary, Priti Patel, added:

“Many of these new officers are already on our streets helping to fight the coronavirus pandemic, and for that, they get my huge thanks.

“These new officers, on top of further funding to tackle crimes such as burglary, robbery and vehicle crime, will ensure the police have the powers, tools and resources they need to cut crime and make you feel safer in your community.”

Last Friday, Graham met with ’s new Beat Manager PC James Stothard, who outlined his priorities for the area – in particular his desire to place emphasis on tackling rural crime and engaging young people in Withernsea.
