Coronavirus – Are We Doing Enough To Tackle Locally?

Coronavirus cases continue to soar in this region despite the national lockdown. However, are we really doing enough to get the virus under control locally?

The second national ‘Lockdown’ feels nothing like the first one. The biggest difference is that it is as usual for most.

Stepping back and just observing what is happening, it feels like small shops, bars and resturants are the only places that are closed.

As a result, there is more traffic on the roads, numbers of people wandering around than there was in during the first lockdown.

Calls have been made by health professionals for schools in the area to be closed to help tackle the spike in numbers. While no one wants to see schools closed, do they have a point?

Local police have already issued notices calling for young people not to interact outside of school on their way home.  But talk about a mixed message. Young people can mix in bubbles in school but when they leave and walk out the gate the bubble is popped.

Since this latest lockdown, it is not hard for groups of people coming out schools and colleges in the town. They are not to blame, the rules lack clarity and are very confusing.

Aside from schools police have already issued fines to people in Beverley holding parties in their homes. This does not come as a shock given the half-hearted attempt at a lockdown.

The leadership in this country has told us for months that Coronavirus spreads through social interaction yet as our numbers locally grow at an alarming rate not much is happening to curb growth.

Coronavirus – Are We Really In This Together?

We are also often told ‘we are in this together’ – well try telling that to the handful of businesses who are shut.  We can not have a pint but can walk around a packed supermarket just a few inches away from people.

You can not buy a jumper from a local shop. But you can go to the same packed supermarket and buy all the clothing you want! Think about that for a moment. Think about how unfair that is.

If you have a small business that was forced to close these are the questions you are asking yourself.  But of course, ‘we are all in this together’.

The government seems intent on releasing the nation at the start of December. At this rate, given how this lockdown has gone, it will end up being an utter disaster.

If we carry on down this path, seeing the numbers we are seeing in this region then we are walking into a very bleak and New Year.
