The waste and recycling team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council has lent a helping hand to an environmentally-themed Christmas musical being staged for children at East Riding Theatre.

‘The Fairy Who Fell Off The Christmas Tree’ is being performed at the theatre from 17 to 31 December and is aimed at youngsters aged three and over.

It tells the story of a Christmas Fairy who takes a tumble off her tree, and the rest of the tree decorations have to try to find an understudy to stop the Fairy from being thrown in the bin and replaced by a brand new one.

The waste and recycling team was happy to help when they were approached by members of the musical’s company, She Productions, who needed some props for the show.

The council team lent the company a blue recycling bin and three kitchen food waste caddies for the actors to use during performances, and also donated some recycling wheel handouts and some Christmas recycling information sheets to give out to the young audience and their parents.

Karen Wagg, waste and recycling officer at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We’re really pleased to help out, especially as the musical has an important recycling message, and we find children are really keen supporters of recycling.”

Annie Kirkman, a company member at She Productions, said: “Our eco-friendly Christmas musical is a festive reminder to think more about the world around us at this time of year when we are often consumed with getting ready for Christmas and excess buying.

“We are so grateful to East Riding of Yorkshire Council for lending us some bins, which feature as the home of one of our characters ‘Wrap-ping Paper’, who teaches the audience about how to determine which bin to put wrapping paper in.

“Come and visit us and we can give you a free ‘recycling wheel’ as well with advice about how to recycle efficiently.”

‘The Fairy Who Fell Off The Christmas Tree’ is currently being performed in the café bar at East Riding Theatre.
