People wanting to vote in next month’s general election but are concerned about not being able to get to a polling station due to potential bad weather are being urged to register for a postal vote.
The general election will take place on Thursday, 12 December, the first time a general election has been held in December since 1923, and it does mean that on polling day there could be bad weather.
Anyone can apply for a postal vote, as long as they are already registered on the electoral register, and means a trip to the polling station is not necessary.
Application forms are available online at www.eastriding.gov.uk/elections2019 or by contacting East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s electoral services team on (01482) 393300 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
People who have already registered do not need to apply again.
Applications for postal votes must be received no later than 5pm on Tuesday, 26 November.
People wishing to vote in the general election but are not yet on the electoral register need to complete a registration form before midnight on Tuesday, 26 November.
For people wishing to register to vote, further information can be found at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
People already on the electoral register do not need to re-register in order to vote in this election.
Electors can also arrange a proxy vote. This is where arrangements can be made for someone else to vote on their behalf at the polling station.
The deadline for applications for proxy votes is 5pm on Wednesday, 4 December but people do still need to be on the electoral register in order to apply for a proxy vote.
In the East Riding, five constituencies will be contested – East Yorkshire; Beverley and Howden as well as Haltemprice and Howden all of which will be administered by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
Brigg and Goole will be administered by North Lincolnshire Council whilst the Hull West and Hessle seat will be administered by Hull City Council.
The counts in the East Riding will take place after polling stations close at 10pm on Thursday, 12 December and will be held at East Riding Leisure Driffield, East Riding Leisure Beverley and East Riding Leisure Haltemprice.
This will be the third election administered by East Riding of Yorkshire Council this year.
