In February this year, Graham Stuart, MP for and Holderness, wrote to all schools in his constituency encouraging teachers to attend the UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador Programme.

Natalie Redpath, a teacher from C o E Primary School, was successful in her application and she returns to the constituency with advanced knowledge of our political institutions following this unique course which ran from 1 to 3 July.

When asked how she found the course, Natalie said: “The Teacher Ambassador Programme was an unbelievable experience. I had a wonderful time, and I learned so many interesting facts about our political system that I can’t wait to share with the pupils.”

Over the space of three days in Parliament, Natalie and the other teachers from all corners of the UK, met senior Parliamentarians from the major parties, they had an opportunity to question the Speaker, they took part in learning workshops and toured the grounds.

The teachers were also able to meet their MPs at a specially organised reception. Natalie commented: “I’m pleased that Graham took the time to meet with me. I’d prepared a list of questions asked by my pupils, and Graham gave some fascinating insight and answers. My pupils are especially interested in Brexit, but Graham held his own. He also offered to visit the school next term, which is news the children will be very excited to hear.”

Graham added: “It’s so important that children understand Parliament and democracy, and how they can shape our society through engaging with these institutions.

“The Teacher Ambassador Programme is an extremely valuable initiative as it gives teachers the opportunity to boost their learning and go back to the classroom with even greater enthusiasm and understanding of UK politics. It was a great pleasure to meet with Natalie. She’s clearly determined to ensure her pupils have the best possible education, and I look forward to visiting her class soon.”

Applications for the next UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador programme will open in early February 2020. Find  out more here: https://www.parliament.uk/education/teacher-training-cpd-opportunities/teachers-institute/
