Football Team At Local College Is One Of The Best In The Country

A football team at Bishop Burton College thanks to its partnership with Hull City has helped established its self as one of the best in the county.

The college, near Beverley, is the home of the Hull City Tigers Academy. As a result, talented students are in a position to be spotted by the club and academy prospects. Players released by the Tigers are able to continue playing at a high level with the college.

This year, five players released by City have gone on to study at the college. They went on to play for the under 19s boys team in the English Colleges Premier League. They have now helped Bishop’s side make it through to the last 16 in the country.

Head of Football at the college, James Bennett, said; 

“It has been a really good season. If you take the second half of last season and the first half of this season, we actually went the calendar year unbeaten in the league. A run spanning 18 games.”

“There has been great camaraderie among the team and our partnership with Hull City has also played a major part this year.”

“Due to the strength of the relationship between the college and the club, we were able to recruit five players they released from their academy aged 16. Those players have formed the backbone of our team.”

“For those players as well, it means that, even though they have been released by Hull City, they have been able to continue playing at a high level with us. It is good for their development to be involved in college football. It also means they are improving their education with us.”

Bishop Burton College Football Team Reach National Playoffs

Bishop Burton‘s Football Team has now qualified for the Category 1 national playoffs for the second year running.

There are seven Category 1 leagues nationally. To qualify for the national playoffs, teams have to finish in the top two in their league. The two best third-placed teams also go through to make the final 16.

Bishop finished second, narrowly missing out on the top spot to Leeds-based Ralph Thoresby. They will now play away at Fowler Education, based in Liverpool, on Wednesday, March 6th, for a place in the last eight.

James said;

“It is a big achievement to get this far because it is a tough league. Every college is trying to achieve the same. So it is very competitive, but we will go there with confidence.”

“We’ve scored eight more goals and conceded two fewer in 14 games, compared to last year. We’ve put a lot of work into making ourselves difficult to beat but we’ve also had more talented players going forward. This is why we have scored more goals.”

“I’m very proud of this team and the lads are really looking forward to the challenge.”
