Third Straight Win Sees Beverley Top National Conference League

Beverley made it three wins from three and have gone top of the National Conference League after they beat Oldham St Annes to 25-14 at the Beverley Leisure Centre.

Tries from Alex Calvert, Trevor Penrose, Peter Starling (2) and drop goal from Lewis Straw ensured Beverley continued their perfect start to the new season, a record shared with just one other club.

Commenting on the game, Head Coach, Scott Taylor, again slightly played down the win. Speaking after watching his side go top of the league he said;

“Well done to the boys making it three from three. There were a few sloppy moments but I asked for a response in the second half and I think I got it.”

“We need to keep it rolling and as new boys to the league we need to keep sending out those messages.”

Oldham St Annes, who travelled from Lancashire, played their part in what was an absorbing contest.

Beverley opened the scoring through Calvert who crossed the line from close range after capitalising on some good work Starling, with Straw adding the conversion.

Beverley’s lead was short-lived as four minutes later Oldham St Annes kicked towards the corner and Callum Cashin pounced to score wide out. The extras were tacked on to level the scores.

Penrose added Beverley’s second try of the game, forcing his way over from just a few meters out. The ever reliable Straw again slotted home the conversation.

With the break looming, Beverley returned a kick to gain good field position setting up Straw who restored Beverley’s lead with a drop goal.

In the second half Beverley turned up the heat on Oldham St Annes and were rewarded when Starling finished clinically after being found by a long ball from Straw.

Any lingering doubts Beverley had were extinguished just eight minutes from time when Starling scored his second of the match finishing off a swift passing movement. Straw converted to extend the lead to 25-6.

Oldham St Annes got some consolation with two minutes to go, with a rare 8 point try. Ryan Powell dived over and was infringed in the act of scoring giving Matty Whitehead an extra shot at goal to pull the scores back to 25-14.

Over all another pleasing afternoon in which the official ‘O’Brians Quality Fruit & Veg Daily Man of the Match’ was Peter Starling.
