A Beverley man has been fined £400 by for dumping rubbish in Bishop Burton.

A pile of waste including builders’ materials, offcuts of wood, screws, paperwork and cardboard boxes was found in the Deepdale layby at Bishop Burton on 6 October this year by a streetscene enforcement officer from the council.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council say they will not name the person responsible for dumping their rubbish in Bishop Burton as they have accepted the fine and avoided going to court.

However the local authority is keen to highlight the issue of fly-tipping and is warning any one who feels the need to dump their rubbish will face prosecution and a hefty fine.

Mike Featherby, head of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

“The council investigates all reports of fly-tipping and any evidence found will be used to take further action which could include a fixed penalty or prosecution.”

An investigation traced the rubbish back to the Beverley man, who admitted fly-tipping.

The council issued him with a £400 Fixed Penalty Notice, but that was reduced to £300 after it was paid within 10 days.

A fixed penalty notice gives offenders the opportunity to discharge liability for the offence but can only be issued when they admit to the offence, otherwise the issue may be taken to court.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council continues to warn residents that they are responsible for disposing of their own waste properly and legally.

Residents can either take their waste to their local household waste site, hire a licensed waste carrier to take the rubbish away, or use the council’s own bulky waste collection service.

Anyone caught fly-tipping could be ordered to pay a £400 fixed penalty notice, or if the case goes to court they could face an unlimited fine or even imprisonment.
